Interesting....I thought probiotics (bacteria) get killed in the HC acid of the stomach if not passed into the intestine quickly hence put into capsules that can withstand the HC acid in the stomach so the probiotic can get into the intestine.

Just what I've heard and read....but hey I've not experimented this way by opening them up if it works that's cool!

Probiotics are recommended for a couple weeks after an antibiotic though, so very good idea.

As far as I'm aware, you are right on target. The only exceptions would be in cases where a PPI or H2 blocker is used. or gastric acid production is deficient for some other reason.

Great My nutritionist told me awhile back to do this??? So I have to take it all at once in order to work? Wonder how the children's probiotic works since it is in powder form?

Thanks guys! I definitely don't want yeast or cdif even if it requires more trips to the bathroom for the next 2 weeks!

Is there a certain probiotic that you would recommend? One that a friend recommended was the Florajen brand (it is refrigerated)....but I don't think this matters so maybe Culturelle?

After finding out the cost of the Xifaxan, I decided not to try it. I informed the GI's nurse and she was kind enough to round up enough samples for the two week treatment and I am to pick them up next week. So I think I will try it and hope for the best.

I am under the weather at this time due to keeping my 16 month old GB for three days. It was so exciting and so fun.....but does a number on my body! It's almost like I have strep throat or the flu (or both). Oh well, so worth having her!!!

Have a great day!

Terre,

So sorry that you have caught something. Until I got enough d3 in my body, I stayed sick with various things. I have 3 kids, they brought home everything. I give them d3 too and that helped.

I'm not up on probiotics, I avoid them unless on an antibiotic. Someone else on here might know better. I bought one for women at Walgreens. Its natures way fortify women's probiotic. This is my first use. Crossing my fingers!

So hope you start feeling better soon!

Martha, thank you for the info on the probiotic you are going to try.

I know that children are little petri dishes....I do take D3, but I think it is more an issue of having her 24/7 and not being used to it. I push through any issues I might have to enjoy my time with her since I don't get to have her that often. Therefore, when the visit is over, my resistance is down and I usually feel like I'm coming down with something (and usually do). I admit it.....I'm getting old!!!!

Thanks again,

Terre,

Don't forget antihistamines can be helpful for kicking us out of a flare--to give you another option to try down the road.
