Holly,
Did you ever see the movie Catch-22? Magnesium deficiency causes insulin resistance and causes the pancreas to reduce insulin production. Without adequate insulin and without proper insulin functioning, many nutrients cannot be properly transported to cells where they are needed (including magnesium). Therefore, when a chronic magnesium deficiency occurs, it's almost impossible to rebuild magnesium reserves (because of the insulin resistance and insulin deficiency).
IOW the only way to resolve a magnesium deficiency is to take more magnesium than the body needs for daily purposes so that it can store the surplus. But the Catch-22 is that if you have a magnesium deficiency, you can't utilize much magnesium. Resolving a deficiency requires a carefully choreographed balancing act. So as Gabes mentioned, taking large amounts of magnesium will only overwork the kidneys, because your body cannot utilize most of it.
The key is to take magnesium in metered doses during the day, so that an adequate amount is always available to keep your blood level in the normal range. Eventually, your body will begin to respond to the improved utilization of magnesium and insulin production will increase and insulin resistance will decline. That will enable your body to begin transporting some of the magnesium to cells where it can be stored as reserves, and your body will be able to utilize progressively larger amounts of magnesium in order to rebuild those reserves. But early on, it can be tough going.

Thank you, Tex, Gabes, and all. From what you say, Tex, it sounds like the ReMag (I'm starting Day 3) may be a good product for me, as it is something I sip in water throughout the day, and am starting at a low level, gradually increasing the dosage every few days. I'd thought that using the transdermal magnesium oil would be good for that also, thinking that my body would "soak up" what it needed and maybe be more effective long-term than taking oral magnesium supplements (plus reduced risk of laxative effect).
I appreciate you explaining this vicious cycle so clearly. Do you think drinking the ReMag throughout the day, gradually increasing the dosage, and going back to a lesser amount of the transdermal magnesium, and only before bed, might be close to that "carefully choreographed balancing act"? I've also ordered the Doctors Best Chelated Magnesium Glycinate. Do you think I should wait to add that in, or what would your advice be about which ones, and how to best utilize these 3 forms of magnesium?
Thank you again. It feels to me very likely this long-term chronic magnesium deficiency may be at the heart of many health issues not only for me, but ones most members of my family had/have. I'm fairly certain that the first time my magnesium levels were ever checked was in the ER after my MC symptoms had started (so, age 60, a decade after being diagnosed with T2 diabetes, et al).

Holly,
IMO magnesium deficiency is behind some of the symptoms most people in the general population complain about, but never resolve. They are never able to make the connection because the medical community is blind to this problem. Magnesium deficiency was the cause of some of my most perplexing symptoms, for many years.
I believe if I were in your situation (especially with insulin resistance causing complications), I would hedge my bet by sipping the ReMag throughout the day, and I would also use limited amounts of the other treatments in order to maximize the chances of absorbing and utilizing magnesium by any possible avenue. But I would limit the magnesium glycinate to 1 tablet (100 mg) per day. I wouldn't go wild with the topical magnesium oil or lotion either, but a little now and then surely wouldn't hurt, especially if you have occasional leg or foot cramps. There's just no way of knowing how much we are actually absorbing into our cells because there are so many things that can interfere with not only the absorption, but the transportation of magnesium into the cells, where it is needed.

It's been quite a while since I have checked in here. I saw the thread on hair loss and and wanted to ask, what is Re-mag? I am probably low on magnesium. I use it topically twice a day, but may not be enough. He dries my skin so much, I wish I could take it internally, but everything has been working quite well for a while and I hate to mess it up.
Does Biotin really help and does it disrupt the digestive system? I have both MC and IBS. It could possibly be the Imuran too, at least that is what my GI thinks.
Thanks
Nancy

ReMag is the Dr Dean magnesium drops - highly absobable.
Here is Vanessa's post where she talked about the improvements she noticed when she upgraded to this better quality magnesium product

Re the BIotin - I have been taking it for over 12 months - it has not caused any issues to my gut.

Nancy,
i use a product similar to ReMag - highly absorbable liquid form that i get via my chiro practitioner. Way cheaper for me rather than pay international postage rates for ReMag.
in saying that majority of my magnesium comes from topical magnesium.
