Vitamin D And Dry Eyes

Post by tex »

Hi All,

A recent study shows that vitamin D deficiency is associated with dry eye symptoms.
“We are of the opinion that vitamin D plays a protective role in the development of dry eye, probably by enhancing tear film parameters and reducing ocular surface inflammation…Vitamin D supplementation may be useful for dry eye symptoms, including ocular discomfort, soreness, redness, ocular fatigue, sensitivity to light and blurred vision.”
New study suggests vitamin D deficiency is related to dry eye

Hi Tex,
I was wondering why I was having dry eyes, so I am glad I found your post , it being a year old, is it still relevant, as maybe this is the reason for my trouble, I have dropped back a bit from 6000 to 4000 maybe I need to keep it up to the 6000
once again. I will do that and see if it improves things. I actually use some artifical tear drops( Refresh brand) and they will lubricate before going to bed but sometimes
I do wake with dry eyes that will burn unless I get the soothing drops in them right away.
I sure hope the missing link is the Vitamin D and it clears things up, and stops disrupting my sleep eh! As always thank-you for all you do for this panel. amazing how many people you have helped, those you know about and countless others who probably have not come forward yet and are silently being grateful in the background. I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't found all this information when I was lost in this maze and depression this disease creates. thank-you for being the captain on our Ship of knowledge, along with the many crewmates leading us to remission. :pigtail: have a great day.

Hi,

Thank you for the kind words. As far as I'm aware, that information should still be valid. MC tends to cause eye inflammation (such as iritis or other forms of uveitis), and because of all the intestinal inflammation, we tend to use more vitamin D than "normal" people. So increasing your vitamin D supplement dose is certainly worth a try.

I hope it helps.

Hi Tex,

I am glad you told me the information is still relevant, I love when we can help ourselves naturally with supplements which are good for our overall health, I will monitor for a few weeks to see if it makes a difference or not, hope it makes a difference right away though :-) :pigtail: You rock...
thanks you again for your help.

Wow! I didn't know this! Thanks! I have suffered severely from dry eyes since my LC started. My functional doc started me on 4000 Vit D and within a few months my dry eyes aren't as bad!! I wondered why they were getting better!!! Too much Vit D affects my diarrhea. So sticking to 4000 IU for now.

Hi,

I have been supplementing with vitamin D3 for a couple of years, but March 31 this year my GP called me and told me to stop taking them. My result was 275 nmol/L (our ref area is 50-150). So, I did what I was told to, and August 19 the result was down to 162 nmol/L.

So, even after 2 months of summer during the 5 months between the two tests, it did drop by 113 nmol/L. Our summer has not been that sunny up here, so I thought I would start taking vitamin D3 again.

Maybe take a lower dose and then measure the level in October?

I understand that VD levels rise slowly; so, maybe a low dose would be beneficial for the bigger picture.
