Diana
the good news in all of this is that no one said a word to me, one way or another, about why I wasn't eating what they were. While they may not understand MC, and they don't include any safe foods when they plan the meals, no one seemed to care that I brought my own food.
This is what I do. It is way way easier, and actually makes socialising way more peaceful and enjoyable.
Glad you had a great time

The poison line that is something that i used to say and I shared it with Gail (gac) recently to help her for social situations etc.
when they question 'cant you just have a little bit' (of gluten or dairy) I ask them ' would you have a little bit of poison if you knew it was going to make you sick?'
the other thing I will say (if need be) have you ever had 'Bali Belly' (really bad travellers diarrhea, not sure what the USA equivalent is) and they generally will reply Yes, it is the worst, i thought I was going to die.... well that is how my body reacts to gluten, dairy, soy etc.

with these type of statements it puts the 'consequence' of life with MC into context for non MC people. and why the choices i am making to minimise symptoms is quite important.

Welcome to our group, Marly. Feel free to so share anything with our internet family. I share more here than I do with my family and friends. This family understands the journey I'm on. Liked dhouts, I take my own food everywhere I go. At first it bothered me, but now I am fine with it. I am eating more healthy than the others! Dining out is tricky and you have to be very cautious. I was glutened several times. My husband likes to dine out or I wouldn't even bother. We don't get as many invitations to dine out with friends, but that's okay, too. This is my life, my journey and the acceptance piece is one of the many pieces of the puzzle.

Thanks Gabes for clarifying and thanks for the additional statement to use in social situations. I will remember that one, as well.

In our part of Texas we call it Montezuma's Revenge (Bali Belly) and we all know what that means down here on the border!

Laura,

I live almost 600 miles east of you, but that's what we call it here, also.

I'm curious what others call it across the globe??? Had not heard of Bali Belly before Gabes brought it up. What else is out there?

Bali is a popular holiday destination for Aussies, has been for over 30 years. Majority of travellers there get bali belly

Delhi Belly is another reference name I have heard

Holy smokes! I missed all of this!

Thanks all for the warm welcome and the tips. I wouldn't have ever dreamt of having a dinner party and not asking about guest restrictions, even before I was diagnosed! But I guess I will prepare for that eventuality. I always found it a fun challenge to create a meal that everyone can enjoy at least most of it!

Sorry for the late response gang. Have a great day!

I am new here and have already learned so much from everyone's experiences on this forum. I have had symptoms since January. In May I was diagnosed by a GI with constipation overflow and was on laxatives for 2 months. (You can imagine how that worked out.) Finally I was diagnosed with MC through biopsy during colonoscopy in August and now on Budesonide since August 19 now with no WD.

Our diet for years has been mostly a Paleo diet with lots of protein, fresh fruits and veggies. After finding this forum I'm basically eating chicken, turkey, carrots, parsnips, rice, chicken bone broth, rice milk and 1 banana a day. I feel depleted, hungry with pain and a dozen kids doing jumping jacks in my belly.

My main question and reason for posting is weight loss. In the beginning of August I weighed 108# and today weigh 101#. What can I eat to gain weight and stick to the plan?

I need more protein especially in the morning (I'm used to eggs and bacon for breakfast). What other protein source would be safe to try at this stage?

What other veggies would be safe at this point?

Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks so much,
Char

Hi Char,

Welcome to our Internet family. I have to say that the GI doc who diagnosed you with "constipation overflow" was more than a little naive.
Char wrote:What can I eat to gain weight and stick to the plan?
Many Newbies ask that question, but the answer is obvious — eat a lot more chicken, turkey, and rice. Try some lamb. More than a few of us react to chicken, but nobody reacts to lamb, venison, duck, goose, pheasant, rabbit, or any other (unconventional) meat. To gain weight, we have to take in more calories than are required for weight maintenance. Eating more variety is not the key — simply eat more of the few foods that you know are safe for you. Proteins help to repair intestinal damage and build muscle, and grains (such as rice) are fattening.

Are you sure that you can't eat eggs and/or bacon? If you can tolerate pork, there are safe brands of sausage available. And hash browns can add calories (unless you have reason to believe that you can't tolerate white potatoes).

Squash are safe for most of us, and sweet potatoes are a good source of calories. Most of us can tolerate well-cooked green beans, cauliflower, asparagus, etc., but be careful that you don't overdo the fiber. The fewer high-fiber vegetables you eat while recovering, the faster you will recover.

Avocados are a good source of calories (if you can tolerate them). Pure olive oil (be careful with imported olive oils) and coconut oil are a good way to add calories.

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.
