Martha,
FWIW, I've had major antibiotic treatment regimens that should have killed every bacterium in my body at least twice in the last 11 years during and after emergency abdominal surgery. I have never taken a probiotic, and I have never regretted it.
Last year during the spring, I was having some dental work done and I had to take an antibiotic several times. I had 2 separate 10-day treatment regimens with Bactrim. But when I started the third treatment, I immediately had an allergic reaction to the Bactrim, so I switched to Cipro for (I think, if my memory is correct) 5 days. I never took a probiotic and I never had any gut problems.
But as you may recall, the Bactrim finished off what was left of my magnesium reserves and left me with severe magnesium deficiency symptoms. It just occurred to me that there is a possibility that magnesium deficiency may have played a role in that allergic reaction. Until I ran completely out of magnesium, I tolerated the Bactrim OK. But as my magnesium reserves disappeared, my immune system could no longer tolerate the Bactrim. It's known that magnesium deficiency can cause allergy issues. For example, it's been demonstrated that magnesium can be used to treat asthma in some cases.
There will be a detailed discussion in Edition II about how magnesium deficiency causes mast cell issues. So now I wonder if the people who suffer serious (anaphylactic) reactions to certain vaccinations (such as the flu shot) or other immune system events may simply have a chronic magnesium deficiency (possibly made worse by a vitamin D deficiency).

About the probiotic, I am worried about my bladder. I believe that's what caused my recurrent UTI. Just trying to keep the e-coli out for good. My gut did good, thank goodness.
Thank you Tex about the magnesium info. I've been pondering that myself about my antibiotic use. Cipro caused me heart palpitations after the 2nd or 3rd day. Didn't have problems with it 2 years ago.
Do you recall excessive sweating when coming off of the bactrim ds? It started yesterday. I took my last pill 2 mornings ago. Hoping that is just a side effect and it goes away.
I just took a magnesium pill to see if I have the same symptom as last time. I so wish I could take some orally.
I left my urine sample at the Dr earlier, praying it's clear and stays that way for a long time. Wish me luck!!

Yes, I sweated like a (I always want to say "pig", but pigs can't sweat) horse, and I couldn't cool off, even though the room was very cool. I even had fever (2–3 degrees). I thought I had the flu. This happened before the end of my second regimen of Bactrim, and it continued for 4 or 5 days after the treatment was over.Martha wrote:Do you recall excessive sweating when coming off of the bactrim ds? A day or so later the dentist instructed me to start another 10-day Bactrim treatment. I took the first tablet before bedtime and woke up about 1 or 2 a.m. sweating profusely, with tachycardia, rapid shallow breathing, fever, brain fog, erratic blood pressure, etc. I toughed it out and got up the next morning and fixed breakfast (as we say out here in the country), but I couldn't eat, so I went to the ER. That's when the doctors failed to pay any attention to the fact that the blood tests they ordered showed a flagged magnesium result and very poor kidney function. But at least they agreed that I was apparently having an allergic reaction to the Bactrim. So I attribute the sweating to the allergic reaction I was having.
I hope your treatment was effective because it sounds as though you are now allergic to Bactrim. Welcome to the club.

Oh my word, I had a fever of 101 on Wednesday night my last pill was that morning...I thought I caught my son's fever/virus that he had. He had a fever saturday, so I thought it was that. He had a sore throat, stuffy nose. I had that, but not as bad as my son's. I feel run down. My symptoms are profuse sweating, weakness. I never had heart problems. No appeptite, but I'm making myself eat.....
Now I'm having tingling in my hands and legs? From the magnesium pill or bactrim, not sure....I really can't take anything.
How much magnesium did u take after that?

this came up in my facebook feed today, i found this statement interesting and I thought of you
especially in the area of biofilms. biofilms are one of the main reasons antiobiotics do not provide long term benefit/treatment.
anyway, it may have some information that could help you in the long term...

I am not saying that you have Lyme disease, but some of the principles this person has used may be of use to you.In other words, it’s not the effects of just one microbe, but the microbe coming together with other microbes and other things that disrupt immune function to crush the ability of the immune system to respond properly.
And therefore, my primary focus became restoring immune function. When I stopped trying to “treat my illness” and instead started paying attention to why I wasn’t well in the first place, I began crawling out of the deep dark hole. That, of course, took a radical change in both my mindset and my lifestyle.

Gabes, thank you so much for thinking of me. I appreciate all that you share with me. Very interesting! It is so exciting to read success stories like that. Especially, when it involves using non-conventional medicine and changing a mindset. My body is very non-conventional. My German grandmother grew up on herbs and like me couldn't take anything. Sadly, I feel her death was a result of too much medication.
On a good note, the profuse sweating is calming down. I believe the oral 100 mg of magnesium helped. Maybe this strange tingling arms, legs, and chest is due to my body using that oral magnesium quickly and telling me it's very needed........

Martha,
I thought I had caught the flu, also, but I was never able to figure out where i had picked it up because I didn't go anywhere during the period in which I would have had to be exposed, based on incubation time. And when I had the immediate "relapse" as soon as I took the first Bactrim tablet for the third treatment, the flu began to look a lot less likely.
I increased my magnesium dosage from 200–300 mg to 600–700 mg plus magnesium oil most nights about 20 minutes before taking a shower. In retrospect, if I had it to do over I would probably take less (oral magnesium) because back then I didn't realize that we can't utilize large doses of magnesium until our system begins to recover somewhat.

The Dr office called and yay my UTI is gone. So now it must be Interstitial Cystitis, because I'm still having bladder pain and irritation. Either caused by antibiotic, mast cell reaction from bacteria, high histamine from foods/probiotics, or additional oral magnesium....probably all the above.
I feel mentally I'm at a very low point in my life. There have been many low points in my life, worse than this. I just feel like this is lifelong! I feel like now I can't swim, take a bath, or have intimant relations with my husband along with eating nothing. I live for my 3 beautiful kids and husband. I just want to be healthy and pain free. I'm not a typically depressed person, just not feeling well is depressing.
I keep writing on this post so I am reminded when I have my triumph one day. I want to go back to reflect my long road! I so wished everyone would come back and post their success stories like Jean! It gives me hope on days like today, when I am lacking the will to get up, clean the house, and pick up the kids from school...
Thank you guys for always listening and being an encouragement!!

Or LC. Many of us have the symptoms of interstitial cystitis when our MC is active because the inflammation mechanism with IC is the same as with MC — namely, lymphocytic infiltration into the mucosal lining.Martha wrote:Either caused by antibiotic, mast cell reaction from bacteria, high histamine from foods/probiotics, or additional oral magnesium....probably all the above.
And remember that magnesium deficiency can also cause the symptoms of IC (it's probably the main reason why MC causes IC symptoms). And IMO the primary cause of depression is magnesium deficiency.
And please don't forget that D-mannose is still the most effective preventative known for UTIs. Anything that will strengthen your immune system will also help. Maybe it needs zinc, or vitamin C.
We've all been through a scenario similar to what you described (when we hate to get out of bed), but we manged to get past it — you will too.

Thank you Tex!! Every time I take oral mag pill I feel physically sick in different ways. Its always 3 hours after I take it....Dr Dean has 15 or so reasons why it can make you worse. I just can't figure out which one I fall under. Large dose of d3 is the only obvious one, but I don't want to decrease it.
As my late German grandmother always said, "this too soon shall pass." Law, I hope soon! (Letting my country roots show).

I hear you. I also had a German grandmother.
You're probably aware that magnesium supplementation can be administered by IV (to bypass digestive system issues), but of course that would have to be done in a clinic or your doctor's office.

I didn't know you had a German grandmother. Did she scrap all of your food together and make you finish it before you got up from the table??
I am going to oil up during lunch time too. Plus start using more of the remag oil topically. It doesn't affect my digestion it makes me feel weak to walk, tingling in arms, chest, and legs. On the 4th day, I had to go to bed. I felt so sluggish and lifeless...
I am also going to try and get my nutritionist to order blood work to check my vit c and zinc level.
Thank you for your encouragement Tex! I cleaned the house and picked up my kids....feeling more positive now. I'm going to overcome this! I got the reflux under control.....You always help!
