Fresh Pear...Strike 2

Post by jlbattin »

So, earlier this summer, I tried my #1 favorite fresh fruit: watermelon and it was a no go.........No d, but seriously aching tummy for several hours almost immediately after I ate it.........

So today, I tried a fresh Colorado pear............and strike 2 hit! It's also a no go........no D but seriously hurting tummy almost immediately and probably for the rest of the night.............what a bummer!

It's weird cause I can eat those little cups of pears in their own juice.........I suppose those are blanched or something................but the fresh one was definitely a no go!

Oh well! Gotta try and see if I can eat new things...............

Hi Jari,

Sorry that it didn't work. The fruit in those fruit cups is surely cooked, like all canned fruit, in order to eliminate any threat of bacteria. Since you are able to digest the processed pears, surely you're producing the enzymes needed to digest pears. I'm not sure if that points the finger of guilt at fiber, or some other issue.

. . . maybe after another year of healing.

Thanks Tex. I think those fresh Colorado fruits are some of the hardest for me to look away from.............but, I wondered about the fiber.............so, I'll just wait another year and try it again.................

I can only do 'cooked fruits'. over 6 years into my MC journey and fibre is still not my friend.

Australia is filled with lots of amazing fruits and every summer they are very enticing..
it took me 3 summers to 'let go' of the want for fruit.

the other aspect to this is that you will react to a new ingredient, did you try the process of small amount first day (1/3 of a pear), wait 24 hours, another small amount, wait 24 hours etc?

Gabes,

Thanks for your response, and yes, this too shall pass! And no, I didn't eat just a little bit and wait and then more..........I ate the whole frickin' pear! LOL! My husband told me the same thing. "You need to take it slow. Remember when you introduced other new foods to your system and over time, you were able to eat them again."

"Uh yeah, I remember that now. But yesterday, that pear had my name on it!" I'll just wait a little longer on that one! We live and we learn!

There is hope, Jari. I don't eat much fruit other than small, peeled gala apples & bananas but we stayed at a hotel overnight in July and had complimentary breakfast. There wasn't anything that I could eat so the server asked me if I wanted a fresh fruit plate. I picked at it while my husband ate but I ended up eating much more than I wanted to. I didn't have any adverse affects from it. I had some strawberries, blackberries and I think cantaloupe. My 3 year anniversary is this month so it did take some time. I won't push it and do that often, but it was a nice change. Hang in there!

Hi Jari,
I have just finished eating a peeled peach with 5 blueberries and 2 strawberries, and saw your post, a little too late.. opps, now I await the reaction, I too don't eat fruit unless it is a cooked apple which I have only started to tolerate recently, or I cook up two raspberry 2 strawberry and 5 blueberries in a pot on the stove with a little 1/2 tsp of honey and spread it on my toast like a jam.
and like you today for me , the peach just looked so good and cut up so juicy I couldn't resist and then thought what are two strawberries and 5 blueberries going to do. ( famous last words eh!)
hoping for the best, and maybe I have enough healing under my belt to tolerate that small amount,, however I will not let it ruin my day, as it is said, we learn from our mistakes and going forward continuing to remission being kind to ourselves on the way there is what is important , right. take care.

Twirlitgirl,

We can only hope that you won't have a reaction. Like you, I don't let it ruin my day anymore.............sometimes I don't get a whole lot accomplished when my tummy hurts, and I certainly don't ever do any of it on purpose (cause I HATE HATE HATE feeling crummy)............but if we don't try things from time to time, we never know...............I just chalk it up to, "This is the way my life is going to be forever and I have to deal with it!" Some days are better than others and most days are good! And I'm so much better off than many I know...........I'm upright on two feet and able to go about my daily business most of the time! Here's to good health and hoping that you don't have a reaction!
