I tried asking this question using an old post I found in the archives about the drug and didn't get any response.
Has anyone had experience taking Malarone or the generic version for malaria prophylaxis? I'm going to have to start taking it in about 5 days and I'm afraid of side effects. Going to an area with endemic malaria leaves few options available. I was hoping a low dose of plaquenil would suffice but the mosquitoes in Kenya and Tanzania require Malarone.
Thanks.

I havent taken Malarone, but did take another medication for Malaria Prophylaxis before my MC Dx.
my thoughts are, so far as possible side effects it can be different for each person depending on things like gut health and bodies ability to handle new ingredients etc.
like most things in MC world, it can be different for each person.
Follow the directions - take it the same time each day with Food.
If for whatever reason (the malarone or from travelling) you do get diarrhea, note that your ability to absorb the malarone will be compromised. Ensure you follow other mosquito protection (long sleeves, long pants, be careful at dusk, use DEET spray etc)
hope this helps
