calcium supplements causing heart issues
So the medical community is all abuzz because a new study came out showing calcium supplements are causing heart problems for people.....and they have no idea why.
I know I shouldn't be surprised, but come on guys. MAGNESIUM and Vit D deficiency. I just had to come on here and share my forehead slapping moment. At least maybe someone will stop taking calcium that they probably don't need after reading this...but again. They have no idea why this is happening.....Ughhhhghhhhgh

Hi Vanessa:
We meet again!! Yes, I took calcium supplements (without any magnesium or vitamin D supplements) for probably at least 20 years. While I can't blame any doctors for this, all my doctors knew I was doing this, and of course my reason was to keep my bones strong as I got older. No doubt this, if not directly contributing, certainly did not help, my super low levels of magnesium, particularly since I was able (and did!!) eat, in addition to the calcium supplements, lots of yogurt, cheese, cream cheese, ice cream and other dairy products. And I have to admit ... not so much back then on the green leafy veggies or other food sources of magnesium. I was probably okay with the vitamin D due to my lifestyle in California.
It may be that even more studies will continue to come out that will make especially us "baby boomers" feel even more concerned about all the things we were told were "good for us" and now, years later, studies have shown "oh, no they're not"!! Reminds me of the Woody Allen film "Sleepers" when Woody was awakened after about 30 years ... things had definitely changed since the 1970's when he, a health food store owner, was "frozen". In the world he woke up to, cigarettes and chocolate had been "proven" to be extremely beneficial to one's health!! Hehehe!!

PS ... maybe being frozen for 30 years would not be such a bad idea ....

I believe this constitutes indisputable proof of the accuracy of my claim that magnesium is not on their radar.Vanessa wrote:I know I shouldn't be surprised, but come on guys. It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Every drug commercial, I always think just take some magnesium.
But speaking of calcium, I came across this today..

This has nothing to do with heart issues.....But according to researcher Susan Owens, a low oxalate diet can help with autism, skin conditions, IC, and more. Very interesting...
Pondering whether low oxalate diet, calcium and b6 could help my current bladder situation...

Martha,
The topic of oxalates (or oxalic acid) has come up for discussion in the past. Some of us seem to do better if we avoid foods high in oxalic acid.
