More stress than just money to this bill!

Post by hollyweb »

Has anyone ever heard of this? I was looking at a utility bill and my eye happened to stray to the bottom. Where it read: "PG&E prints its materials with soy-based inks on recycled paper."

Yikes! Thought I'd pass it along as I know some of us are super sensitive to soy.

 There goes another good source of fiber.

Soy ink is used for printing something like 95 % of the daily newspapers in the U. S. these days. Ever notice how your fingers tend to pick up so much more ink when you page through a newspaper these days, compared with the good old days before soy ink became popular (several decades ago)? Hydrocarbon-based ink may not be green, but it's much neater.

I was just wondering if books that are published these days are printed with soy-based inks. My EnteroLab test result was super high for soy (for everything, actually), and I honestly don't know where that came from. I'm an avid reader and handle printed materials quite a bit. Come to think of it ... are the ink cartridges that we use in our home printers made from soy? Printed labels on products? I'm not being paranoid, just curious as it seems a possibility that there could be exposure even in the air, plus absorbed through the fingers, if surrounded by a lot of this stuff! ????

Holly,

Due to the "Green" movement, soy ink is used as a percentage of virtually all inks these days. The "greener" the product, the higher the percentage of soy ink.

While transdermal absorption of certain ingredients may be a problem in some cases, the most common cause of a reaction is due to oral contact with products used on the skin. Handwashing is important after handling anything that might be contaminated. And limitations should be imposed on licking (not only envelopes or stamps, but other items). I offer the following links as supporting evidence, both written many years ago, when this discussion board was still very young.

Cosmetics, shampoo, etc...

Almost always, reactions caused by products that contact the skin are due to situations such as the one described in post number 5 in the old thread from over 11 years ago at the link below:
P.S. If you think the info on gluten-containing toothpaste is unique, you should ask Jean about her encounter with gluten during an intimate situation. Her partner had just showered using a soap that contained gluten. You guessed it! Jean got sick after licking his skin. LOL! Geesh! Is nothing sacred anymore????

Tex,

Thank you for this additional information and clarification. Good to know the variables and what to do to take reasonable care. I had no idea soy was in so many substances and was just concerned.

soy is such a cheap crop it is being used for everything! and it is getting harder to avoid it.

have to wash my hands after touching things. No wonder I am buggered after shopping trips etc, toxin overload.
