supplements while on the healing diet? Mag, Vit D, and B12
Hi all,
My apologies if I am not posting this in the correction section, I wasn't sure where to post. I'm hoping you all can provide me some advice. I was diagnosed in February 2016, and after entocort did not fully resolve my issues, I finally (1 month ago) went on the healing diet suggested in this forum (I basically eat meat, squash, and white rice). It reduced the number of bowel movements, but I still have bloat and my movements are not normal. But I'm going to stick with it for the long haul.
My question: I was taking vitamin D (5000 IU capsule), Magnesium (pill, brand I believe was recommended by Tex - Dr.'s Best) and fish oil. I started taking the magnesium (on Tex's wise advice) because I was having cramps and twitches, and sure enough, after I started taking the magnesium, the cramps and twitches went away. Now with my very restricted diet, all I take is the Vitamin D (I dropped Magnesium and fish oil in an attempt to limit what is going in my body during the healing). But I'm afraid I'm not getting all the right nutrients. Tex's book wisely counsels that I shouldn't focus on nutrition during the healing period, but rather healing. But, after 1 month on the diet, I'm starting to get cramping back and some of the odd neurological symptoms I had before. I'd like to start taking the magnesium pills again, and maybe a B12 sublingual for the neurological issues. Do you feel that taking those supplements will throw off my healing? I know there are magnesium lotions out there but frankly I prefer the convenience of a pill, and I feel more comfortable knowing exactly what dose I am getting. Your thoughts? I very much appreciate your help. This recover has been tough on me and I can't tell you enough how much it means to me to have a community like this. I promise to pay it back when I have my own knowledge on what worked for me.

No. If you are having those symptoms, you need the supplements in order to facilitate healing. Safe versions of those vitamins and minerals are readily available.bttory wrote:Do you feel that taking those supplements will throw off my healing?
Magnesium glycinate rarely causes diarrhea problems unless very large doses are used. 200–300 mg of magnesium glycinate (spread out during the day if necessary) should be a safe dose for virtually anyone. Those who find that they react to magnesium glycinate almost surely react because they are unable to absorb magnesium normally. If we can't absorb it, it remains in our gut, where it can contribute to diarrhea.
At this point in your recovery, the bloat and abnormal bowel movements are mostly due to lingering inflammation (it takes a while for the inflammation to fade away) and poor digestion. As your digestive system heals, your digestion will slowly improve and those symptoms will eventually disappear.

Thanks for the advice; I'll return to the supplements. At the very least, I plan to take Vitamin D (already taking 5000 IU), and Magnesium (as described in your recent post). For healing, should I also take B12 (sublingual) and fish oil? Anything else you recommend. I want to give myself the best chance at healing. Thanks to all of you for your help!tex wrote:No. If you are having those symptoms, you need the supplements in order to facilitate healing. the other thing to keep in mind, if you have been deficient in magnesium for a while then once you start taking it the body (cells and muscles etc) sort of wake up, and start using the available magnesium.

the other things that can optimise healing is blind faith and patience... it will take a minimum of 8 weeks of good doses of Vit D, magnesium, B12 to resolve deficiencies. You may not see improvements day to day, but more so week to week. for the next 4-6 weeks dont overthink things. Relax, nurture yourself, and let the body heal.
the only other suggestion - lots of home made bone broth. it is packed with easily absorb-able nutrients that optimise healing.
happy healing

Fish oil is a good source of healthy omega-3, but it can probably wait until after you have been in remission for a while. Too much fish oil can cause diarrhea, and it's not essential during recovery. If you have neurological issues that magnesium doesn't resolve, the B-12 may be needed. It's almost always OK to take a safe form of B-12. It shouldn't interfere with recovery/healing.bttory wrote:For healing, should I also take B12 (sublingual) and fish oil?

Great, thanks again. I'll stick with Vitamin D and Magnesium for now. Hopefully that takes care of it.
