When to take Vitamin D3

Post by Marcia K »

Hello. I read somewhere that Vitamin D3 should be taken in the evening with the largest meal of the day. I presently take it in the morning with breakfast. Does it make a difference when I take it? I take 400 mg of magnesium at 10:00 a.m. with my mid-morning banana snack and then fish oil in the evening with dinner. There really is no rhyme or reason for when I take my supplements but I don't like to take them all at the same time. I use magnesium gel at bedtime. My ears are currently ringing and I'm trying to figure out why. I ate a coconut bar after dinner (which I have eaten many of) and I'm not sure if it is the cause of the ringing. Always something in the MC world!

HI Marcia,
I take most of my supplements with Breakfast...and a little magnesium in the afternoon....I'm not so sure supplements break down and absorb so well when we are getting into sleep mode and are expecting the body to slow down including our gut too

Thanks, Erica. I'm going to switch things and take more in the morning. I drink my breakfast and didn't want to upset my stomach but I probably should eat more at that time anyway.

Marcia,

I'm like Erica — I take most of my supplements after breakfast and then add another magnesium tablet after each meal later in the day.

The main thing about vitamins is that most of them are fat soluble, so they work better with or after a meal that includes at least a little fat. I usually eat bacon and eggs for breakfast (with plenty of bacon fat) and I seem to absorb vitamin D very well. I took 5,000 IU of vitamin D every other day during the summer (IOW an average of about 2,500 IU per day) and the test result I received last week showed my current level to be 81.

That said, my multivitamin contains 400 IU, so actually I'm taking an average of about 2,900 IU per day. I like to keep my test level up in the 60-80 ng/mL range, if possible.

Thanks, Tex. Living in PA I miss the Vitamin D I was able to get from the sun, too!
