Really scary night
I don't know what happen to me last night...maybe someone can help me pinpoint my problem. I woke up about 1am (not unusual) to go to the restroom and was then up for about 3 hrs (unusual) with watery d and even threw up 3 times (have never had that happen since MC started). I broke out in a sweat and even felt like I was going to pass out and had to sit myself down on the bathroom floor. When I was done with the episode I drank some water and was able to go back to bed and slept for about 5 hrs. I had coffee and a banana this morning and feel okay, so I have ruled out the flu. But I was so scared last night. I was even entertaining the idea of going to the ER.
Dinner was nothing out of the ordinary, but have been having fall allergies this week. Any ideas what I could have done to myself to have had such a severe attack? I have been diet correct, take Claritin, D3 (5,000), B complex, and spray lots of magnesium daily. Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

Hi Laura,
It's not impossible for some viruses to cause single episode reactions similar to what you described. If it happens again tonight, after you've been fine during the rest of today, you're almost certainly severely magnesium deficient.
Believe it or not, magnesium deficiency can cause all of those symptoms (and many more, in some cases). And severe magnesium deficiency reactions virtually always occur during the wee hours of the morning, because that's when the body typically runs out of magnesium. Been there, done that.
Such reactions occur because if the blood level of magnesium drops significantly below the normal range (because there are no longer any reserves in the cells of the body from which magnesium can be withdrawn),the autonomic nervous system becomes unable to properly control vital operating parameters of the body, such as heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, body temperature, etc.
If it's serious enough, the enteric nervous system (which is part of the autonomic nervous system) will shut down the digestive system in order to conserve energy and help to keep the more vital functions going as long as possible, and this leads to vomiting and diarrhea. The lightheadedness is due to a severe drop in blood pressure (usually accompanied by rapid heartbeat. My heart rate was almost double the usual rate when I was having those episodes.
When my magnesium deficiency finally became a crisis, I was taking a magnesium supplement — just not enough, and the accumulated deficit finally became greater than my body could tolerate. The icing on the cake was an antibiotic treatment that apparently depleted what was left of my meager magnesium reserves.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Tuesday night I endured vomiting every half hour for 6 hours. I was so weak that I was willing to go to the ER for IV fluids and an injection to calm my stomach. But I didn't.
I think it's a virus that's going around. I felt fine the next day. I was weak, but otherwise fine. Maybe the recovery is fast on this one. I heard from a friend that she had it the night before me. I believe I caught this from the baby that I care for; he and some of his family members had it this past weekend and then, of course, I got it.
Hope this helps and hope you feel better soon.

Thank you Tex and Diana.
So far the day is going along fine, but I'm sticking close to home (and re-reading several chapters from your book Tex). I have been taking some Drs Best magnesium at night, but not every night because I forget to. Did not take any last night. I think I will make sure I take some from here on out because what you discribed sounds a lot like what I was experiencing.
I hope it was just a one time virus attack, but am going to up the magnesium at bedtime anyway! After reading the recommended article I have several other symptoms of deficiency....hair loss for sure.
Thanks for helping.

My only comment is related to drinking water. What I have experienced, is that we should not drink plain water, but add unrefined salt and some natural sugar (juice from lime, lemons or oranges) to our water all the time. Water will steal important minerals from our body while passing through our digestion on the way out.

Well, I made it through the night and got a good 8 hours of sleep. Yeah!!! So I can only assume it was some kind of bug that I ran into. I did take my magnesium pills last night and will continue to make sure I don't slide backwards on keeping my levels up.
I like the suggestion about the water and will start trying that. I have always liked a little lemon/lime in water and these days I seem to be craving more salt, so this fits.
Thanks to everyone for being here. Stay healthy!

Man these viruses are really making the rounds. A week ago I had a fever for a couple days ( and by fever I mean chills, sweating, and body aches but not 102 degrees ) that turned into a rotten head cold that has now moved into my chest. Last night I had more fever symptoms after starting to feel better. Like I've got a different bug now while my other cold is still hanging on. I've never had this before......I blame the election. It does really get old to be sick constantly, either with a flare of symptoms from MC or colds and flus. Sorry for the rant. Here's to better days and stronger immune systems....
