Has anyone had a reaction to shingles shot?

Post by Martha »

I've read over the archives on shingles vaccines, and I didn't find anyone who had actually had an adverse reaction to the shingles shot.

Has anyone had a problem with it?

I just had my annual physical, and found out that my insurance will pay for it 100%. I'm waiting until my husband gets home from a trip before I do it, so that if I do have a bad reaction, there will be someone else in the house (and someone to take over my grandchild-driving responsibilities!), and also I wanted time to get input from people's experiences here on this board.

I have not had it, but my husband's aunt did. She got the shingles shortly after it. She went from driving now to being homebound. She is elderly though, but it took it's toll on her.

I had a shingles shot last year with out any negative reaction. I'm 63 y. Recently, I discussed with a friend who is a D.O. She said that the vaccine is 50% stronger than the chicken pox vaccine and...it's only 50% effective. I decided to take the chance.

My husband got the shot last year but got shingles this year. I've been on the fence about getting the shot....probably not. Deb

Both my husband and I got the shingles shot several years ago. No reaction and no shingles, so far. Even if it is only 50% effective, shingles can be so unpleasant and long-lasting that I feel it is worth it to get the shot.

Mom got shingles last January. She had had the vaccine about a year prior.

She ended up in the hospital for three days and had to get the Valtrex shingles med via IV. She was at risk from losing sight in one eye. She had a milder version of the disease. Valtrex is a strong med.

I would hate to get a full strength version of the disease.

Having seen what Mom went through I plan on getting vaccine at age 60.

My Mayo PCP is pretty tolerant of my "crazy" ideas. She tolerates my reservations (kind of) about immunizations but says she is seeing less severe cases of shingles than she used to and believes it is because of the vaccine. Still on the fence Deb!
