Peppermint capsules (enteric coated)

Post by bttory »

Hi everyone. Have any you of you tried peppermint capsules (enteric coated) and had any luck? I've read a lot lately about how people with IBS (and some IBD) have reduced symptoms using those capsules. I'm typically willing to give something a try when I'm in the healing phase, but wanted to see if you had any success (or if there is a reason not to take them, such as bad experiences or another reason it may set me back).

Thanks for your input and advice.

Hi,

I took some. I could not tell if they helped. They did not hurt. I had peppermint burps and really good breath!
I think the one I was taking was soy based which is why I discontinued.

I don't think I've seen any that are not soy based but perhaps there are some out there.

Peppermint burps suggest that the enteric coating is not preventing breakdown of the capsule in the stomach. The problem with having peppermint in the stomach is that it's one of the items that can cause acid reflux/GERD. Presumably that's the reason why a good enteric coating is desirable for peppermint capsules.

That said, as long as acid reflux is not a problem, then breakdown of the capsules in the stomach shouldn't cause any issues.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I think you are correct about the soy aspect. That alone is reason to stay away. Thanks Brandy.
