Heidelberg Acid Test Anyone?

Post by Suzy »

I'm considering having a Heidelberg Acid Test to see if I have too high or too low acid. I'm 6 months off the horrific PPI poision, 6 weeks off Pepcid, and still having chest burn after meals (but getting slightly better, very slowly, over time). I'm nervous about using apple cider vinegar or HCL Betaine because I have a history of gastritis. I did feel better after sipping some fermented sauerkraut juice but am nervous even that could trigger gastritis (maybe I'm just overly paranoid). Has anyone here had a Heidelberg test and do you know if it's safe (ie are there any downsides/risks)? Thank you!

Suzy,

I had the same burning until I started the ReMag (after 2 years of mag supplementation with glycinate and oil). Once my mag reserves went up, pain and burning ceased. PPI's are notorious for depleting your mag levels. I tested with the Betaine Hcl and realized I had too little acid, so I never tested with the Heidelberg Acid test.

Thanks Vanessa.

I have ReMag and have been adding just 1 drop to my water per day (plus I take Mag glycinate and topical). My mag level is 5.3 . How much ReMag do you recommend? (Do you put a certain number of drops per day in water)?

I use 2 teaspoons a day sipped in my water throughout the day. I use a baby medicine dropper to measure. It took 3 months to get to this dose. I also put 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt in each liter of water and drink half my body weight in ounces of water. I also use 1 teaspoon of ReMyte a day. There are detailed instructions that came with the bottle and are listed on the website too, if you need a reference on how to proceed.....Did you do the Magnesium RBC test? Did you take any magnesium before you tested? You want to be in the 6.2-6.6 range. I've never tested that either. My main magnesium deficiency symptom is my heart palps. So I just go by those.

Thank you. It was mag RBC and I was taking mag glycinate and oil before. Did you have gastritis and gerd before?

Hey Suzy,

I should have clarified. If you took magnesium the day of your test before you tested, the test result will be invalid. I had burning behind my breast bone when eating food. I never was diagnosed with GERD because I knew that Zantac gave no relief and most people have too little stomach acid not too much. And I'm sure I've had gastritis through my healing journey. My stomach would burn at night and gas was horrific for about 6 months. I never expected those things to go away because of magnesium, but they did!

Hi Vanessa. So would my test result been higher than normal because I took mag the day(s) before? Thanks for the help and the hope! PS -- the only thing about Remag that makes me nervous it is has stearic acid in it, and I"m concerned that can irritate gastritis (the acid part). Do you know?

If you did not take any mag the day of the test, you are good. The day before makes no difference. I doubt there is enough of that ingredient to cause any issues. It did not for me. My feeling is if you can slowly up your dose of mag to a therapeutic level, the healing of your gut is going to follow shortly after. I turned a huge corner once I had the proper minerals to actually heal. Just go slow. Look up "when magnesium makes me worse" by Dr. Carolyn Dean just so you are familiar with some things that may come up in your body that are short lived. You've probably already done this. I tell so many people about this stuff I can't keep everybody straight

suzy-
if my memory is working ok, you are coming up to about 6 weeks of Vit D and magnesium supplementation??

it can take about 8 weeks of high dose supplementation to resolve mild deficiency
for some it can take longer - for me it was about 5 months..

healing takes time...

Did anyone get there doctor's approval before starting on magnesium glyconate. I have been on proton pump inhibitor - Prilosec for years for GERD. I now have MC for several years. I had also been taking a lot of Motrin for knee pain before realizing that Prilosec and NSAID can lead to MC. Also a statin for cholesterol so I am a mess. Luckily I do not get D everyday.. I don't know what foods trigger it.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. Do you mean magnesium gluconate or magnesium glycinate? I'm not sure that anyone here is taking magnesium gluconate — most of us take magnesium glycinate.

I doubt that many members here received their doctor's approval before starting a magnesium supplementation program. Magnesium is not even on most doctor's radar. I had chronic magnesium deficiency symptoms for over 10 years between 2005 and 2015, even though I was taking a magnesium supplement (but not enough). I complained about the symptoms to many doctors, but not a single one ever suggested that I need to take magnesium, let alone take more magnesium. I even went to the ER when my symptoms became severe. After I finally figured out (by myself) the reason for my symptoms, and resolved my symptoms by taking much more magnesium, I explained the details to my doctor (and showed him my test results) and he agreed that magnesium deficiency had been my problem and I should continue to take it.

Did any of your doctors ever mention this FDA warning about PPIs and magnesium deficiency to you? Note the last line, that I've emphasized in red.
[3-2-2011] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is informing the public that prescription proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs may cause low serum magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia) if taken for prolonged periods of time (in most cases, longer than one year). In approximately one-quarter of the cases reviewed, magnesium supplementation alone did not improve low serum magnesium levels and the PPI had to be discontinued.
FDA Drug Safety Communication: Low magnesium levels can be associated with long-term use of Proton Pump Inhibitor drugs (PPIs)

GERD is caused by food sensitivities, in most cases. Virtually every one of us here is sensitive to gluten. Almost all of us are sensitive to the casein in all dairy products, and most of us are also sensitive to soy. Many of us are also sensitive to eggs, and some of us have additional food sensitivities. All of these food sensitivities are caused by untreated gluten sensitivity. Doctors mistakenly think that if we don't have celiac disease we cannot be sensitive to gluten. But that's wrong. They don't even have a test for detecting non-celiac gluten sensitivity. So how would they know?

The bad news is that PPIs cause the very symptoms that they are prescribed to treat, so it's extremely difficult to wean off them. It's possible to wean off PPIs by switching to H2 blockers and then weaning off the H2 blockers. H2 blockers are what your doctor should have prescribed in the first place. H2 blockers don't cause all the health problems that PPIs cause.

But the good news is that by avoiding all of our food sensitivities, most of us are also able to prevent arthritis symptoms and many other symptoms that are caused by gluten sensitivity and other food sensitivities. Avoiding all our food sensitivities stops the inflammation that causes autoimmune diseases (including MC) and many other health problems.

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything. Trust me, we are all a mess before we come here to share information that allows us to get our health back.

Do you think ghee is safe (less or no casein) and egg yolks vs whites?

Suzy
when resolving the GERD issues etc and when I had more inflammation in my body, I was taking 5000-7000iu Vit D3 daily via a lingual product (ie more absorbable than tablets etc)

Magnesium - when I was resolving the deficiency issues I was having upwards of 800mg of elemental magnesium per day - via powder product (which was a highly absorbable mag product - practitioner only australian brand) and using magnesium oil on my skin. I did this for at about 5 months or so.

After resolving the magnesium deficiency (and the B6 deficiency linked to histamine inflammation etc), reducing toxins in my body etc, i have vastly lowered inflammation levels in my body - this means that i only need about 2000iu of Vit D per day - please keep in mind that i live in sunny australia and get time in the sun each day all year round.
as I am still in a process of clearing excess toxic metals and use reasonable amount of magnesium I need about 500mg elemental magnesium per day.
