I am back to square one on dealing with diarrhea. A bit of history. I was diagnosed with colon cancer, early stage back in 1997. They removed 18 inches of colon including my sigmoid colon. After the surgery constipation was the norm but I never used any medication for it. 4 years ago I developed sudden onset of diarrhea with pain. Stool specimens were negative so I chose to go GF after being on an elimination diet. The diarrhea finally abated and I fell into a 'routine' of foul smelling gas, bloating and urgency. Some reading brought me to the self diagnosis of IBS. I 'managed'. Then this past July after a trip to California I developed sudden onset of diarrhea with pain. Again, stool specimens were deemed negative. This time around the diarrhea was debilitating with weight loss. I was due for a colonoscopy so decided to bring my gastroenterologist into the mix. At this point I had discovered your site! I did another round of stool specimens. Due to an error in entering a test by the assistant, a wrong test was done. I received a call from the county health department telling me that I had tested positive for giardiasis! The GI disputed this but upon her doing a little digging she found that the 'wrong' test which was an immune globulin panel actually is now used for diagnosis. I was placed on Flagyl for 7 days. I had a full week past the end of the medication that I had no diarrhea but then it started back up. From my research I found that folks with giardiasis have recurrence and often need more than one run of Flagyl. The GI thinks that I may have had giardiasis since the first bout of diarrhea 4 years ago! So, another longer round of Flagyl was done. I am now on day three after finishing the medication and the diarrhea has returned. I am currently on a FODMAP diet. The only thing that seems to be a possible problem is that I took Aleve twice in the past two days for body aches. I had taken it once after the last round of the Flagyl. That is when the diarrhea returned then as well. So, now back to no pain relief but hopefully a return to better bowel function. Aleve is not the cause of the underlying problem, in my opinion, as I have used it in the past without problems. Thankfully, I have a colonoscopy scheduled for the 13th of next month so the GI can do biopsies. Hopefully I will come up with a diagnosis and treatment plan!

Welcome! Hopefully Tex will chime in soon. You are welcome to our family despite you non diagnosis or whatever your diagnosis turns out to be.

Generally for pain relief Tylenol or ice packs or safest. :santasleigh:

welcome to the group

what most people here find is that - no one thing causes things like MC, it is multiple inputs that causes the major inflammation reaction
further, things that we seemed to be ok with in the past, once things like MC are 'active' then that item can be a major trigger now.

if you read some of the other posts and discussions you will notice that everyone is different, there is no set eating plan or treatment plan that works for everybody.
people can have different triggers. and some of the ingredients of your FODMAP diet could be contributing to the diarrhea.

we do have a guidelines to recovery section with bland, low inflammation eating plan that works for many. It will work for any IBD, not just MC.

hope this helps

Hi,

Welcome to our Internet family. I'm sorry that you've been having to deal with those symptoms for so long. If you have actually had giardiasis for years, then there is a very good chance that you may have developed MC by now. Assuming that you are still following a GF diet, if I were in that situation I would also cut all dairy products out of my diet to see if that has an effect. If that doesn't help, I would also cut out soy.

If you have been GF for a long time, then you should see a relatively fast improvement after cutting out the other possible food sensitivities. If that doesn't help then you may still have giardiasis or some other problem. The pathology report after biopsy samples from the colonoscopy are analyzed should provide the information needed for planning a reliable recovery program.

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

I have been on the FODMAP diet since the beginning of September. GF, no dairy, no cruciferous vegetables, no fruit, no beans or legumes. Very low sugar. On a good probiotic. Two rounds of Flagyl so giardiasis should be gone. Up all night with symptoms yet again. I have never looked forward to a colonoscopy so much:) Luckily I have good days as well so able to keep some weight on this old carcass:)
Thanks y'all for being out there!

Have you ever tried skipping the probiotic for a few days? Many of us cannot tolerate a probiotic while our MC is active.
