Fasting
Hi,
When my WD was at its worst and my weight dropped drastically, fasting was the last thing I would think of. I was constantly hungry...
I have bought a book about Vitamins and Minerals by Abraham Hoffer and Andrew W. Saul. In a chapter called Treatment Alternatives to treating constant D, it is said that a 4 days' fasting is a good solution. A 4 days' fasting will empty the colon in most people and most organisms will be flushed out. If we start eating good, nutritional home cooked food and drink a lof of water, reconolization in the gut will mainly consist of organisms that live in symbiosis with us.
Has anyone tried fasting for 4 days? I would love to try, but 4 days is a long time...

I question the claim that 4 days of fasting will result in most organisms being flushed out. That's not likely, though it will probably make some difference.Lilia wrote:Has anyone tried fasting for 4 days? I would love to try, but 4 days is a long time...
I once lived on water, 7-Up, and clear jello for 2 weeks (between gut exams). All I got out of it was a severe case of hiccups. It definitely did not resolve my MC symptoms. It did get rid of about 20-something pounds (10-something kg) of weight that I really couldn't afford to lose at the time.

If the weather was not too hot, and one was not working, having to do housework etc then it might work.
By day 2 of fasting I could not drive my car or work.
There is also a book about fasting by Bragg. my take on it is you would have to plan for 5 days of nothing.. To do the 4 day fast.

Hi everyone,
I wanted to revive this discussion on fasting to see if anyone has tried a fast, and if so, how it affects MC (or any other IBS symptoms you may experience). I did some reading on fasting (once a month for 3 days at a time, that allows for eating coconut oils, etc.). I don't anticipate that it will resolve my MC, but some studies suggest it may regulate immune response, etc. Just curious what experience others may have (if any).
Thanks.

I have done quite a bit of reading/research - like most things in MC world, everyone is different.
One of the main reasons why people do fasting is to expel toxins, expelling toxins will only work if
a) your methylation cycle is in balance (b group etc)
b) you have the right nutrients (ie magnesium, Vit C, etc) to 'attach' and excrete the toxins
c) inflammation levels are low and you have good digestion system
a few of the bio hackers have done some good podcasts about it - and my take on it is - it does not work for everyone.
this one is about women ( i know that you are male)
https://blog.bulletproof.com/a-bad-comb ... and-paleo/
https://blog.bulletproof.com/brad-pilon ... sting-174/
my other learning with this, that if someone is nutritionally challenged (ie has multiple deficiencies) then fasting can do more harm than good.
this is the case for me as I am trying to resolve life long multiple deficiencies. most of the 'fasting guru's' that benefit from fasting - do not have chronic illness (or multiple health issues)
the other aspect is that if you do fasting, it is important to 'REST' keep activity to a minimum during the fast and the next day
this can be difficult in todays busy lifestyles.

I do what is called intermittent fasting. I fast for 14 - 16 hours daily, eating only 2 meals a day. I don't eat after 6PM and have breakfast somewhere between 8-10AM. Dr Jason Fung is a proponent of fasting. Here's an article about fasting and autophagy by Dr Fung:

He also has a website:

He is a nephrologist primarily interested in Type 2 diabetes and obesity and uses fasting as an integral part of his approach.

Interesting post, Jean,
I fast for about 16 hours virtually every day, but I never thought of it as fasting. My last meal of the day is usually a snack before 4 pm. Like Jean, I basically eat 2 meals each day, plus a snack. But I do it because I have an ileostomy and I don't want to run the risk of having to get up during the night to change a pouch. It never occurred to me that it might have other health benefits.
I'm pretty sure that for millions of years, our paleo ancestors didn't eat 3 regular meals each day. They ate whenever they were able to locate, catch, or kill something to eat. When the hunting or gathering was unsuccessful, they probably did a lot of unplanned fasting. So our digestive system probably evolved to accommodate periods of fasting.

thanks for the reminder to provide this info
on the weekends, when I am not working, and able to rest more, i only have 2 meals, the last one at 5pm to take evening tablets/supps etc and do no eat again until the next day, similar timings to what you mention. I do this for both days on the weekend.
