Am wondering.........

Post by jlbattin »

So, my husband and I were by ourselves for Christmas and rather than cook, we went out to eat at IHOP. I can eat their bacon and fries. That's about the only thing on the menu, but that's what I always order, and I do just fine. Later that afternoon, I ate some of my Costco corn tortilla chips that I've eaten bags of before. I had a few other things. I remember thinking when I ate those chips that they didn't taste right. Sometime around 7 PM or so, my stomach started hurting and I ended up going to bed, only to get up and throw up several times. Once I had gotten rid of it, I seemed to be ok. I know it was the chips. My husband had some of my bacon and fries and all of the other things I have eaten since then with no problem. It was the chips. There was something bad and it was a very mild case of food poisoning.

However, that little incident seemed to mess with my whole system, and the next day, the watery diarrhea started again, and I fought it all last week. Foods that I had been able to eat before didn't set with me this time. It seemed to be the processed foods (which I don't eat much of anyway, but I do like those new Van gluten free waffles that don't have soy, and a few other things that I've been able to eat with no problem). I ended up going back to my good ole chicken, rice, and banana diet to help calm things down. Things are much better now, but I'm still not where I was before all of this started. Those chips just seemed to turn my life upside down!

Anyone else have any experience like this? Something unrelated messes up your system and then creates havoc? That's the only thing I can attribute it to.......that and a little more stress than normal that I'm working hard to get under control!

Jari,

I'm sorry to hear that you had those bad days. It's possible that the extra stress (plus the chips) caused the flare. A couple of years ago I had a flare that lasted a few days, and some mild symptoms lingered for a week or so. It apparently was triggered by the stress of a second kidney stone (three weeks after the first one).

Here's a link to where I posted about it:

Can Kidney Stones Trigger an MC Reaction?

The following spring (several months later) is when my chronic magnesium deficiency finally became severe and I figured out the cause of a lot of symptoms that I had been having. Kidney stones are also a symptom of chronic magnesium deficiency. We live and learn, but at the time neither I nor any of my doctors had the foggiest idea what caused the kidney stones. One would think that most doctors should be aware of the connection and one of them would have checked my magnesium level.

Anyway, I'm convinced that any type of chronic stress can cause an MC flare.

Jari
sorry you had a bad reaction and have ongoing symptoms

down this main page - check out the post 'The inflammation bucket'

I think this is a good explanation of what happens in MC world - maybe there were a few things causing not so noticeable reactions but then something 'tips' the bucket and inflammation levels struggle to calm down.

hope this improve soon

Hi, Jari. Sorry to hear that you're going through this. When my son was going to Punta Cana on spring break I was stressed from worrying about everything and I ate too many potato chips which I can eat without any issues. The D hit me with a vengeance but luckily it didn't last long after I took some Pepto tablets. My body was letting me know to stop worrying about everything little thing that can go wrong. If you tasted something "off" then there probably was something wrong with the chips. I recently had the same experience with the coconut bars that I buy. It actually turned my stomach and I contacted the company to let them know they had a bad batch of bars. The bars looked & smelled funny, too. I hope you're back to normal soon.

Hi Marcia,

Do you buy the Oskri coconut bars? I ask because I have recently had a similar experience with those bars (funny smell and taste, and in some cases, a visible dark portion that I assume is mold). In the instances where I had a bite or two of the bar (before figuring out that it was "bad"), I suffered discomfort and looser stools the following day. The newer batches of the bars that I bought have not had that problem (and do not cause me any issues), so I continue on with them, but I wanted to raise the issues for others that eat those bars.

Hi Jari,

Sorry to hear about your experience. No fun. I'm not an expert and cannot explain why it happens (as others in this group may be able to), but I have had a similar situation. I don't eat nightshades and once in a moment of weakness ate one. The next day was miserable for me, but like you, even after the D ended my system was "off" for a good week or so. It eventually went back to what is "normal" for me, but that one potato had a profound effect on my system. It was a real lesson for me on consistency of diet (and how a relatively small amount of offending food can wreak havoc). I hope you are feeling better.

Yes due to too many chips and too many raw nuts.

YES!!!!

For Halloween we ate out and then did a haunted tour thingy. The bar was serving alcoholic drinks out of pumpkins and I had a white wine. It seemed odd to me to serve a drink like that and it was warm like it had been sitting in the pumpkin for a while. I started to feel off during the tour and projectile vomited while the guide was speaking. Then came the watery mess. I had to go back to my original safe foods for a few weeks before I felt totally normal again.

The tour guide thought it was a sign that I was "sensitive to the paranormal" so I guess he has a new story to tell on future tours. Yey?

Hopefully this is just a small setback and you feel better soon!

I will include myself in this mix also...

But not only have I had something trigger me....the stress from it made my mc worse because I was 'stressed' about the flare....what an endless battle that is.

I revert back to my broth soups and try to address the source of my stress so I can deal with it and move on. Amazing that the holidays can hold some stress but they did this year....and I felt it....I started having better Normans after I knew I didn't have any more special meals to consider, or people to visit..etc. Stress still has a hold on my life at times....I am trying to learn how to identify it and live with it better. As soon as I started going back to my work routine and not being on Winter break anymore, I started feeling better too.

I hope you feel better soon and get to the root of how you feel so to end the flare cycle.
Hugs
