Husband in Hospital

Post by Marcia K »

Hello, friends. My husband has been in the hospital for a week now. It has been a very stressful week for me with working full time at a stressful job and then spending my evenings/weekends at the hospital. I am grateful though, that my insides have stayed where they belong. It's difficult to eat right when on the go like that, but I have been able to do it by preparing things the night before. I found myself eating too many potato chips (stress) and I had to talk to myself about that. Yesterday my body was starting to hurt so rather than walking to the dog before I went to the hospital I soaked my feet in Epsom salt and took another shot of Vitamin D3. I'm weary but not spending time on the toilet, so all is good in the LC world! I don't know when he'll be discharged as they are still doing tests. At age 57 he was fine one day and couldn't walk the next. I had to call an ambulance to take him to the hospital because I could get him down the stairs and into my car. Among other things he was tested for Lyme Disease yesterday. Our son is driving home from college tomorrow for a surprise visit. He has been worried about his dad. I have faith that everything will work out. Each day truly is a gift! Have a great weekend everyone! PS He had bronchitis and had just finished an antibiotic and was still coughing when his doctor gave him the flu vaccine. This happened four days later. I can't help but think the two are related and we have mentioned that to his doctors several times but they're not seeing a connection.

Hi Marcia,

I'm sorry to hear about your husband. Hmmmmm.....flu shot four days earlier......hmmmmm.

It sounds like you are doing a pretty good job of taking care of yourself. Remember the airplane rule, if you are traveling with a young child put your own oxygen mask on first. i.e. Continue to allow time to get your groceries and cook your foods etc and foot soak etc.

It is good that your son is coming. When my boyfriend was in the hospital for 11 days with his liver abscess situation I would pick up sonster (the boyfriends son) and drop him off at the hospital and then retrieve sonster later, i.e. sonster and I would spell each other. That really helped with my energy.

Hopefully all the tests will show something.

Blessings to you and your family. Brandy

Marcia,
So, so sorry to hear about your husband!! You guys will be in my prayers! You take care of yourself! The flu in our area is not in the flu vaccine, so they makes me even more glad that I didn't subject myself or my family to it.

Please keep us posted about your husband!!

I hope they are checking for this:

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/vaccine ... nbarre.htm

I became aware of this condition after taking my one and only flu shot in 1976. It made many people ill in another country and was pulled in the US after only a few states had used it, if memory serves.

Memory does not serve well right now because I just woke up and I'm still half asleep, but I wanted to add this link in case it's helpful.

I hope your husband is well soon!

Marcia,

I'm very sorry to hear that your husband and you are having to deal with this worrisome problem. I agree that it does indeed sound a lot like Guillain-Barré syndrome. If it is, it should run it's course soon, and with any luck at all he should fully recover.

Take care of yourself.

Thanks, everyone. I googled his symptoms right away and read about GBS. I asked the doctor about it when he was in the E.R. She said she didn't think that's what it was because GBS typically starts from the feet up. His pain started in his neck. He asked the doctors about GBS each time he met with the team. Some of them did acknowledge that they thought it might be that. Now they're saying that it's not GBS but I don't think I will be convinced that this isn't related to the flu vaccine. Last evening was the best he had been in a week but now this morning he said he's in a lot of pain again so we're back to the drawing board.
Brandy, thanks for the airplane rule. That's great and I will keep it in mind because I have a tendency to put everyone's needs before my own which is probably one of the reasons that I have LC. One day at a time!

Hi Marcia,

Sorry to hear of this stressful news. Just wanted to pop in and say Myasthenia Gravis might be something else to bring up with the docs. It tends to start with in the upper extremities but can affect limbs with sudden onset......Heres to a speedy recovery!

Thanks, Gabes and Vanessa. A friend on mine had Myasthenia Gravis a number of years ago. I'll have to give him a call because I can't remember how he said it all started but I do remember that he thought he was going to have to retire. He got better and is still working. I had a massage scheduled for the day that he was admitted to the hospital. I'm hoping that I can soon reschedule the appointment!

in the mean time, keep up the Vit D3 and magnesium, calm the mind when you can, podcasts and audiobooks are great - even if it is only 10 mins a day,
