Anyone else have experience with alopecia?
So, about 20 years ago right after my mom died, I had a pretty severe bout with alopecia. I had a huge bald spot around the neckline of my head and several smaller spots around my entire head. I went to the dermatologist who referred me to an endocrinologist and he tested me for everything in the world.......and there was nothing wrong. So, we finally came to the conclusion that mine was caused by stress and since it happened after the death of my mother, that made sense. It all grew back in and over the years I've had smaller bouts with it from time to time (nothing as severe as that first time). Most of it I could all relate back to some stressor in my life. I haven't had anything in quite some time. I went to get my hair cut today and my hair dresser told me I had a small one kind of at the top of the back of my head. She only saw the one and since I've been going to her has never seen any. I was just there 5 weeks ago and didn't have any. I can pinpoint the stressor that brought this one on. Thank goodness I have very thick hair and so they never show.
But, it got me thinking that if it'll do that to my hair, what on earth might it be doing to my gut? I have had a rather tough time recently and was really working hard to get it all under control. I have been eating chicken and rice again for about 2-3 weeks. I know one thing for certain, I have got to figure out a better way to deal with stress than worrying. And this too, shall pass, but I just wondered if anyone else in the group has had any experience with alopecia?
Just seems like if it's not one thing, it's something else...............

life is 'it is not one thing, it is something else'
in short, we cant avoid stress or hide from it, but we can change how we react to it.
hair wise, my hair remains healthy if I have regular home made bone broth (the amino acids are key) and take biotin
checking the nutrient textbook - the nutrient deficiencies linked with Alopecia is biotin, B5, copper, zinc.
before taking high doses of zinc/copper, it is best to check your zinc and copper blood test results and adjust supplementation based on this.
if you are low in copper, taking high doses of zinc alone, may cause issues.
and likewise if you are high in copper and low in zinc, taking too much copper will cause issues
iHerb have MC safe biotin product

Gabes,
Thank you so much (as always) for your helpful reply! I will add that to the blood tests to ask my doctor to test. I think I have one of those nutrient Bibles (I think it's called).............I need to find it and do some reading myself.

Hey Jari,
Dr. Carolyn Dean sells a product called ReMyte that has those minerals in it in liquid form (to help support adrenals and thyroid). Since starting that, my period is finally normal and hair isn't falling out. It doesn't have Biotin in it or the B5 but her ReAline are the methylated B's with some other amino acids in it....all good stuff!

I know that this is an old post, but yes, I’m waiting for biopsy results to see if I have Alopecia. I have read a couple of studies indicating that it is related to IBD. I’m concerned that systemic treatment like Kenalog injections or cyclosporine may exacerbate my MC. Im hoping that it can be treated with topical meds. I’m curious how you have treated your condition?
I've had several bouts with it. Have been tested for everything under the sun and they never could find anything and chalked it up to auto immune and/or stress. I have very thick hair so it was never noticeable. It sort of just moved around my head in different spots. I just let it grow back in and it did. When I get highly stressed my hairdresser will say, "Jari, you must be stressing. You have a small bald spot."
When I first found it, it was several years ago before being diagnosed with MC and also right after the death of my mother, the whole bottom part of the back of my head was bald. I have extremely thick hair and I just let it grow back in. It always has.
