Plantains

Post by randyh »

Anyone tried plantain, fried, baked, dried?

I use to dehydrate them and eat them with some sweetened home made walnut butter when I was well.

They are more starchy than sweet if you get them on the greener side.

Just thought I would throw it out there see if anyone has experience with them while having issues? I was thinking of trying to make some French frys out of them since I am not tolerating any nightshades at all right now. Looking for something beside sweet potato's, which are good, don't get me wrong but looking for a little variety.

Hi Randy,

I've never tried them (they aren't even available in the small towns around here where I usually shop for groceries). Hopefully someone who has tried them before will share their experience with them.

In the meantime, here's an old thread about using them for various purposes.

As far as I'm aware, they're usually tolerated well.

I eat Goya brand plantain chips, and find them quite nice. I've never had a problem with them.

I get them fresh at WalMart, well as fresh as they can get I guess. I am going to give them a try and a pancake and also some French fries for a variety. I will let you know how it goes.

I purchased plantain chips after reading people rave about them. They caused me to look like I was 6 months pregnant. I like them but they obviously don't like me.

Randy, I think we smashed the discs and then pan fried them in coconut oil.

I make waffles & socca bread out of plantains.

Just like you, I get tired of sweet potato, and plantain adds variety.

I LOVE plantain chips. But all chips in general are fattening, and being 20 ponds overweight, I don't eat them often. Anyways, they don't bother me.
