Buffet Dining

Post by Marcia K »

Last evening I attended a buffet dinner at my son's college. I did my homework ahead of time by calling the hotel to ask what was being served. At first I was told that I had to speak with the student in charge of the event and he would call the hotel to speak with the chef. I wasn't putting my health in the hands of a busy college student so I emailed the hotel to explain my concerns. I received a call from the banquet manager who informed me that most of the food being served was gluten free but the vegetables and potatoes would be cooked in butter. I don't eat any dairy, but last evening I went for it and I had a few roasted potatoes and some broccoli (there really wasn't much butter on them.) I know that I was playing Russian roulette with cross contamination by eating at a buffet but I wanted to enjoy the event with my family without placing a special order. I took a GlutenEase before and after the dinner and so far I have been fine. After dinner my son leaned over and asked, "How is your gut?" It made me smile that my son was worried about my gut. I also drank a small glass of white wine and he said I was really whooping it up. He's a college senior and this was our last dinner so it was sort of my last hurrah with him. I wouldn't have attempted this early on my LC journey, but 3.5 years post diagnosis I was hoping my gut could handle it. I typically wake up with a headache if I have been glutened and that didn't happen today so I am hoping that I'm in the clear!

So happy to hear this Marcia!

It truly sounds like you needed to do it regardless of the outcome...glad you haven't seen any extra symptoms so far. We have to do these once in a lifetime moments...I can't imagine a bit of casein taking its toll on you so harshly that it would not have made it worth your precious dinner with your son....love it.

Wonderful news Marcia

this is a HUGE milestone in life with MC.
and heart warming to hear that your son checked on you (well your gut)

with a bit of pre- planning, and knowing that doing these type of events can be enjoyable, is very good for our wellbeing!

progress (not perfection) at its best
take care
