Another update, HRT, carrots

Post by Martha »

Since this is the day I had hoped to be on my way to Thailand (as Plan B after my cancer diagnosis), and I'm not, I thought I'd post an update.

My surgeon got both my surgeries done quickly in hopes of my being able to go to Thailand in time for my grandkids' spring break, which starts today. She suggested that I ask the radiation oncologist about accelerated radiation, which a stronger daily does for a shorter time, so I did, and the radiation oncologist said she'd try to make that work out for me. But in the end she didn't advise it. My cancer was in the left breast, and she said it wasn't safe to have stronger doses of radiation so close to my heart. This is partly due to the fact that I'm so thin, and there's not much padding between my outside and my heart. Let's blame that on MC!!

So the trip to see our newest grandson, born Feb. 27 in Bangkok, is put off until the fall. We can't go in May or the summer, because my DIL's family will be there then. The positive side of this is that the baby will be older and more alert, and I'll be able to be out in the sun, and swim, which are all good things.

It's been said many times in this forum that HRT can block remission from MC symptoms. But since I had such severe mood swings without the hormones, I was willing to put up with less than remission. Breast cancer has made HRT impossible, so I've had to go off it. An anti-depressant is helping with the mood swings, and I've had only two incidents of D (not WD) since my first surgery on Jan. 20. A pleasant side effect of having cancer, I guess. It's very nice to have Normans, and I still can't get over feeling proud. It's a little pathetic when you are proud of poop. You guys are right--HRT has a definite negative effect on MC.

My appetite really changed after the surgery, and the only vegetable that appealed was raw carrots. I don't have trouble with raw veggies, so I started eating a lot of carrots. After a while, though, I realized that I was having way too much gas, and really stinking up the place, and it got worse as the day went on. I cut out the carrots, and sure enough, too many carrots was the culprit. I am now limiting myself to 3 baby carrots a day. Bok choy and spinach cooked in bone broth is now a regular on my table.

That's it for now. I don't post much, but I read often, and feel like you all are friends, even though we've never met in person.

Happy spring, and Happy Easter to you all.

Martha, I'm sorry for the disappointment. I've been thinking and praying for you. But you're right about the baby. It will definitely be more personable in the fall. Hugs! Deb

Martha, best wishes for a good recovery.

I had Lobular Carcinoma In Situ in 1999, lumpectomy with sentinel node biopsy (not at all standard then), chemo and radiation.

Dear Martha,

I am so sorry to hear this! I do wish you lots of strength to complete all your treatments. My hope is that these couple extra months before your trip will allow you to recover and gain energy so that you will be able to have a wonderful time with your grandkids in fall. On the plus side, the baby will be at a very fun age, interacting a lot more with you than it would be now. That all sounds good but I know that personally I would have a very difficult time sitting here thinking I would be on my trip now...

Sending you lots of love and a big hug,

Patricia 🤗❤️🤗

I wish you could go now but just think more fun and giggles with the new baby in a few months. Your treatment will be over and everything settled down. So a weight is lifted off your shoulders and you will be more relaxed and able to enjoy.

Hi, Martha. So good to hear from you. You have been in my thoughts. I'm sorry that you can't make the trip now, but as Gabes said, there is a reason things happen and we just have to go with that at times. The baby will be so much more active in the fall and that will be a plus for you! I help in the nursery at church once a month and I am amazed at how much the babies change in one month's time. I had to smile at your being proud of poop - how this disease has changed things for us but Normans are a cause for celebration! Take care and I hope you have a wonderful Easter.

Hi Martha!

Well everyone has already said what I would have said too! When I read your post I had an 'Aw Darn it!" moment...but then an engaged baby in a few months sounds pretty darn fun too

Big Hugs to you and that you continue your healing journey, may Easter bring blessings to you
