Vit D and/or Magnesium and also question on burning sensatio

Post by AlwaysWondering »

I was recently told by someone on one of my FB MC support groups that if I am taking Vit D (I am 4000 mg day, but sometimes forget) that I should also be taking magnesium. How do I know how much of both to take and what is recommended in terms of pills? (I.e. I take 2 tablets @ 2000 mg each of Vit D but have no idea about what form of magnesium to take or how much. This is all new to me.)

Also, on another note -- do some of you get a feeling similar to heartburn (kind of a burning, raw feeling) in your gut -- further down than where you would have heartburn? This is just a recent thing. For the past month or so, I've been feeling very good with none of this raw feeling, but I feel almost like I am entering a new phase of this crappy illness but have not changed much of anything in terms of diet.

You don't know. You either test or you guess. As a rule of thumb, 5,000 IU per day is safe for anyone according to the Vitamin D Council. Magnesium is easy because 80 % of the population is magnesium deficient. So take the RDA at least. That's 320 mg for women, 400 mg for men. Taking more corrects a deficit faster but too much magnesium at one time causes D, so space it out or take less.

All kinds of pain is possible with MC. That could even be due to healing.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

to expand on Tex's reply, what each person needs is either confirmed via testings or guessing/listening to your body.
it can depend on where you live, how much time you spend outside, inflammation levels in the body ie how much you are using each day.

Vit D3 - we recommend 5000iu for most people - some need more than this if they have multiple AI issues or high levels of inflammation.
the best way to confirm if you are having enough is to have blood test to confirm current levels.

Magnesium wise - the daily requirement is about 350mg Elemental Magnesium per day. those with health issues, taking certain medications, deficient, etc need more than this.
the safest way for MC'ers to get good amounts of magnesium with no risk of gut issues is using topical oil or lotions, and having epsom salt foot soaks/baths etc.
there are loads of discussions about this in this section
