Newb with Anxiety med question

Recently diagnosed with MC. For the most part, I'm OK, but in stressful situations, I often find myself in emergency mode, most recently on a flight.

In anticipation, and during a stressful situation I notice that I'm really clenching my tummy, which I'm sure contributes to the urgency and the need to go, right now! Catch 22. I'm worried about pooping my pants, so I clench my tummy, which creates the need to go.

Wondering if anyone has similar experiences and if anxiety meds have helped? I'm also starting to meditate.

Welcome to the forum. Anxiety is a symptom of magnesium deficiency, which is an extremely common condition, especially among MC patients. For treating anxiety, magnesium is the best medication by far, but you'll never see a doctor prescribe it because magnesium is inexpensive, and it's available without a prescription. Because of that, about 80 % of the general population is magnesiuim-deficient and the percentage among MC patients is even higher.

welcome to our group - and sympathies that you had to find us

Stress /anxiety is a big trigger for many here. things like meditation and breathing exercises are very helpful to manage anxiety etc.

some suggestions that may help you
- when I used to do air travel for work, I would wear diapers on the plane (and had suitable outfits that disguised this)
- following our low inflammation gut healing eating plan minimises accidents and runny poop
- taking things like Imodium when travelling is a good way to ensure there is no accidents
- the anxiety medication 'Elavil/Endep' - amitriptyline in low doses has helped many here to calm the gut and reduce anxiety
- from a fix the root cause point of view, having good levels of Vit D3 and magnesium can help reduce anxiety and calm the gut

have you looked at our guidelines to recovery section, many of the suggestions above are mentioned in this area

Hi G,

I was very anxious for many years before I got a good source of magnesium under my belt. It seems like a dream now. However, I wouldn't trade it for the world because I have a bag of tricks in my arsenal now that I wouldn't have been "forced" to learn had I not gone through those things!

Thank you, Vanessa. What's the best way to take Mag? I just went to Whole Foods and got a non-GMO, gluten-free liquid. 400mg per day. That stuff taste nasty! :)

Hi G,

In the beginning of your healing, topical Mag and Epsom salts baths and foot soaks are great options. Most members here do well with Dr.s Best Chelated Mag Glycinate.

The only liquid Mag I trust is ReMag. But in the early stages of healing, you have to be careful with it as it is very highly absorbed and can seem irritating. You can use ReMag topically and orally while going very slowly with it, which I liked. Gabes has a "sticky" about magnesium at the top of the forum which gives great info on where and how to start.

As far as the taste, I'm one of the weird ones that can't stand plain water anymore. Make sure you drink half your body weight in ounces of water and spread your mag dose out through the day. Too much at one time can cause D since the body can only absorb so much at once.
