I do the same thing. Every single time we go to Five Guys Burgers, I always tell them it needs to be in a lettuce wrap, and they always ask, "Is this because of an allergy?" I always tell them, "Yes." What difference does it make, and it's NONE of their business..

I get it that for the 'majority' it appears it is a fad as they do not show any symptoms to support the need to be doing it. But sometimes intuition can be our best friend so there should be no harm in choosing to be gluten free if one chose to, perhaps saving themselves misery as we who deal with MC on a daily basis know to well.

I think in some circumstances the doctor is right. There are people following a gluten free diet, spending much more for gluten free foods, that will not see much health benefit out of their efforts. That's been talked about on this sight before though. In ways it seems to be a politically created disease. Some such as us with stomach issues can and often do see health benefits.

I agree nobody wants you sick from eating in their establishment. In my experiences by saying it is Celiac I was given a gluten free menu and told to pick anything I like, it is all safe, but so many things on there I do not eat, which do not all fit under the safe foods for me umbrella.kd025 wrote:I applaud restaurants that ask if you're GF because of an "allergy" or a "preference" -- they want to know how careful they need to be. It's not because they're nosy. They don't want you to get sick either! ;)
so now I feel it best and find it so much easier with saying it is allergies and then they have paid more attention to me and listen more and realize it more than just gluten free they need to be concerned with. That is where my chef card comes into play, stating my disease and why I need to eat the way I do.
I actually am anxious and gracious speaking with a Chef offering my Chef card for his reference ,and stress no substitutions without speaking with me first, before he/she prepares my meal so he/she sees it in my face how much I appreciate his/hers effort at providing a meal which I can feel good about and can have a great experience. This is why I don't eat out much , it takes alot of effort but sometimes I want a change and take a chance.
I recently went on a vacation and ate in a restaurant rather than cook another one of my meals in the condo and I told the Chef this and he said that he would make my night special and he did, I had no after effects even a few days from consuming the meal he prepared to my instructions. I actually bumped in to him a few days later in the hall on the way to his kitchen to work and he remembered me and asked me if I was feeling fine and hoped I had enjoyed the meal. I knew he cared and that is special to me. there were many guests and the restaurant was very busy but he remembered me and took me seriously.
