One year into this journey

Post by LauraAnn »

I just wanted to jot down a few thoughts after surviving a year of MC with the help from everyone here. This is mostly for me to remember and learn from my mistakes and successes. But feel free to read on!

In March of last year I had to learn a new language...how to speak MC. Went on my own down the road of healing through diet and supplements (GI doc was of zero help), but did find good support from my primary care doc. I performed the testing necessary to find my intolerances and also did the dna test that helped a little. Once into the eating plan that worked, it was a up and down battle for about 6 months. Then something wonderful happened. I started feeling better and even started leaving the house to do my own grocery shopping and buying clothes that fit my now -40 lbs. frame. Still keeping to the basic plan until the end of November I was still not having "norman" visit, so I added cholestyramine to the mix. Success! The very first dose allowed me to sleep through the night and the morning routine was to go once (a lot more solid) and felt good all day. So I'm sticking with one dose at night and having "norman" most of the time. I have started added a few things back into my diet and sometimes it backfires on me. But I'm not afraid to try! I have done okay with a hard cheese, sour cream, more vegetables, store bought gluten free breads, some corned beef, pecans, green chili, enchiladas and flautas. Can have a glass of white wine with no problem and also tequila, which is a real treat. It sometimes helps wash away the stress of the day. Still avoid raw vegetables, chicken eggs (duck eggs are ok), soy, gluten and have to carefully watch the sugar intake.

The best thing that has happened this new year is to feel like I really do have my life back. I seriously thought I would never be in this place a year ago. You guys have very much allowed this to happen just by being here and sharing. I have learned so much from this forum. I realize that I need to stay alert and be aware of any signs that MC is trying to take control. I guess it will always seem like waiting for the next shoe to drop.

Will be visiting my pc doctor soon for updating blood work up, etc. and I'm expecting that things are going to look good. Trip to eye doctor and dentist were both good, so I came through the year okay on those. Whew!

So the plan is to stay the course for now. Continue with complex b, vitamin D3 (5,000 right now), Claritin red, and 30 sprays (minimum) of magnesium oil to start the day. Cholestyramine to end the day. What I need to work on: eat more protein more often throughout the day. I still do not get hunger pangs so I forget to eat sometimes during the day. Also, I don't seem to "taste" things in quite the same way right now.

One strange thing happened a month ago.... My hair decided it wanted to be naturally curly all by itself. Really! I woke up one morning and there it was! I have lost a lot of my old hair but it's ok, I like my new hair! Unfortunately, it didn't decide to change color too, it's still white.

Sending out love and hugs to all of you. Thank you for being who you are! :bigbighug:

Laura
ohhh what a beautiful post to wake up to! it has made my morning

my hair has done something similar, with the right cut style I have soft curls (it is 60% grey) but thanks to all the bone broth it is soft and healthy.

I hope the wellness and happiness continue to flourish

LauraAnn, so glad to hear your good news! So wished my hair would turn curly again. It turned straight when I got pregnant with my first child.

My 13 year old son's was wavy but now it's kinky curly. Puberty has taken over. Everyone asks me if he is biracial. He is as white as a sheet😀.

Don't get up on your hair yet Martha. My sister's hair turned to curls in her mid-50's and mine in mid-60's. You still have a chance!

Thanks Erica. I got the idea from you to chronicle my experience on this forum. It is meant to help me and others who are as scared as I was a year ago.

Kelly...there IS hope!

More to update on.....just got back from a last minute whirlwind trip to Albuquerque NM that was a total success! I have not ventured far from home base in over a year until this week. I found out that one of my "must see" bands (The Mavericks) was going to be 4 hours away and I had to go. So I got the tickets, packed the car which included my safe snacks and off I went (with my sister and cousin as caretakers). I drove the car up and back, we ate at a Denny's half way both up and back and had a grand time. I guess there really can be life with MC. Who would of thunk!

I have to confess, though...... the day before we left I had WD and cramps and couldn't sleep. I know myself well enough to realize that this was just a small PANIC attack and I wasn't going to let it ruin my trip. This was going to be mind over matter and the mind won out. I gathered myself together and was able to accomplish this much needed trip.

FYI. Denny's has a new menu that has many new items that are labeled GF. Like English muffins, nachos, etc.

And to top it all off, the concert at the casino there was fab, the dinner before was fab, and I left with more money than what I went with! Life is good!

Hi Laura:

So glad you had a good time. Thanks for sharing your success story. I have some trips coming up this summer that I'm a bit concerned about. It's encouraging to see folks venturing out. I'm more nervous about leaving my own kitchen and eating 'other peoples' food than anything.

Enjoy your success!

Laura,

Thanks for the update. I'm glad the trip went so well.

Kelly, I know exactly how you feel about only trusting your own kitchen. I'm pretty much still that way. I did take a bottle of glutenEase (thanks to suggestions from this forum) in my purse and used it ...and (don't laugh) put a roll of toilet paper in the back seat for "just in case".) I found that most servers are very helpful when you let them know of your intolerances. And when in doubt, just say no!

Thank you Tex. I have been following your progress and am so glad that you are doing okay.

Great update Laura!

Yes I have encountered a Denny's and was surprised to see they had a GF line up...I also bring my own flavoring into a restaurant for my morning coffee  The servers just look at me a little uniquely, never saying a word though.

I'm also glad to be a source of encouragement to speak your mind and document yourself in a moment of time and space for future reference  Sometimes just writing it out lifts the spirit

My mom and I plan to take a 4 hour Mt Hood Railway train ride in July and I'm looking forward to it! Baby steps...you bet.....someday I wont go over the million things i have been doing to make sure I don't have a reason to stress over my food situation, lol. Time and patience I keep telling myself....

Cheers!

Visited with my wonderful Doctor yesterday for my check up. She was so supportive and genuinely interested in how I am progressing that I left feeling pretty good about things even though I'm not perfect. We talked mostly about how far I've come in the past year, reminding me the time before last we talked it was in the hospital. So yeah, things have really come along! We have to run the labs to know how well things really are, so I'll know in a little while what adjustments I need to make on supplements, etc.

She is so proud of the fact that I have done my homework and have stayed the course...makes her job a lot easier  We are a good team because she can answer questions and explain things so that I understand. I even added to her knowledge when I told her I added K2 to my supplements and she was impressed with that.

One of things I brought up ( a new symptom) was how I feeling "weepy" lately -not depressed, just emotional. She spent the time to explain that that was a very normal reaction to what I have been going through for the past year and a half. Having a life alternating experience is not easy and I need to just go with the flow and not quit working on myself both physically and mentally. She asked if I had a support group and I was proud to say "yes, a great one!"

As she was leaving she walked over and gave me a big hug and said she was so happy to see me with a smile on my face and looking good. (Apparently I was pretty grim the last time!)

So I guess Monday I'll pop over to the lab and get my tests done. I am very curious how my levels are.
