Crohns hmm I'm not sure that's the whole story

Post by Jimbo1968 »

Hello all its been some time I hope I find you all well. I've patiently taken Prednisolone which was prescribed to me for Crohns , initially I thought it helped but as the dose reduced things seem almost as bad as ever. In the last week I've been started on another medication called Pentasa , I'm not sure of its benefits at the moment. I'm still gluten free, dairy free, low fodmap low histamine and low fat foods. Is this something I'm going to have to live with ?
I'm going to pursue again the possibility of Microscopic colitis, which I feel was ignored after finding obvious inflammation. Thank you all Jim [/b]

Jim
you might have to suss out some Crohns forums to get better idea of management options and impacts long term

from my experience, my mother was Dx with Crohns at age 60. she was part of a drug trial for prednisolone treatment, it didnt work. All the coritsone treatment gave her was osteoporosis.
The only thing that reduced symptoms was following a strict Gluten and Dairy free eating plan.

Age 73 - she had bowel removal and stoma bag installed. She continued to have issues - as the GI doctor told her she could eat whatever she wanted. She had various GI symptoms, fatigue and lots of issues with the bag. Only when she went Gluten and Dairy free and avoided foods that caused BM consistency issues - was it reasonably manageable.
high level Vit D3 supplementation and magnesium got rid of long term gerd issues.

Hi Jim,

I agree with Gabes. The Pentasa might help to suppress the symptoms a bit, but it doesn't address the original problem, which is the chronic production of inflammation by something in the diet. Maybe you are sensitive to soy. That would mean that you are also probably sensitive to most or all legumes as well.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

hi Gabes and Tex , I'm still on the Chelated magnesium and vitamin D3 5000iu. Infact my biggest improvements have been down to these I think. At least now I operate without pains and fatigue . With respect to Crohns forums it is very difficult to find anyone else with inflammation of duodenum or upper Jejunum, I think I total I've been in contact with 4 others on a site that contains over 15000 members . It's rare location I've been told. I'm still considering the Enterolab test as I have a high IgE but the blood food allergies test wasn't very informative to say the least.
I've given up so much that avoiding soya if I haven't been already would probably not be a problem. Everything I eat now is home cooked and plain , nothing flavoured or with sauces or anything fancy and it has helped. Gabes so many with Crohns like your mother have the bag either temporary or permanently, I hope to avoid it but God knows what the future holds.
By the way I'd like to forward thanks of my partner whose pains in her back caused my her endometriosis have got a lot better since taking the magnesium on your recommendations. It took a while to convince her but when she finally tried them she admitted that they really helped.
You two have helped me so much since the start of my problem I am very grateful. I wish you both good Heath . Jim

I am glad to hear that your partner has seen improvement. great news.

Its tough to read, and realise, and overwhelming to accept, that the long term prognosis is restricted diet, restrictions on your lifestyle and no guarantees of avoiding surgical interventions.

you are young and with your good response to the modified eating plan and VIt D3 /magnesium etc you have a really good prognosis to avoid surgical interventions. the hard part is the mental and emotional side.. and keeping the motivation going to the slightly intense requirements.

My guess/pondering is - the people that have ongoing issues are the people that dont implement the diet, lifestyle changes early enough and diligently enough. And are not proactive about the basics like Vit D3 and magnesium etc.

Hang in there... If you want to some recommendations of reading material to help with the mental and emotional side let me know...
