Flu!

Post by jlbattin »

I can honestly say that for the first time in 4-5 days, I feel somewhat human again but not great.. I went for my regular yearly physical Tuesday morning with my MD. Everything was fine; bloodwork was all good. My husband had been home sick all weekend with what he thought was the flu, however, and I was desperately trying to avoid it. But by Tuesday afternoon, I started with the cough and by Wed. morning, I wasn't feeling very good either He managed to go back to work on Friday and was feeling better. Yesterday, we went to this little clinic because I wanted to make sure of what was going on with me. Sure enough, both of us had the flu (which I still have), It's going around our area like crazy and they are seeing lots of people with flu for this late in the year.

I anticipate that mine will be another solid week before I am 100 percent, if then, with my other issues. My biggest problem is I have hardly eaten anything because nothing tastes good and everything I eat goes right through me. I can't get a handle on the diarrhea. Even my safe foods are no longer safe. I did find I had some chicken bones this morning and put them on to cook and plan to have some bone broth later this evening to get some nutrients in my body. Any other ideas for added nutrition?

I was so achy that even my hair hurt so without thinking we bought some Tylenol Cold Max. I don't know if it's something in the Tylenol or just being ill, but I was up and down 3 or 4 times before I settled down and went to sleep. I suspect hidden soy. The ingredients are thus: Inactive Ingredients: Alcohol, Anhydrous Citric Acid, FD&C Blue No. 1, Flavor, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Purified Water, Sodium Benzoate, Sorbitol Solution, Sucralose.

Probably no way of knowing without emailing.

no hidden soy but - alcohol, citric acid, sorbitol and sucralose are common triggers for MC'ers

best MC safe approach to things like the Flu
mega doses of Vit D3 like 10-20,000iu per day for 3 days (see quote below)
lots of Vit C and zinc (supports immune system and clears virus etc)
rest

http://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplem ... b-20060400
For the prevention of respiratory tract infections: 400-2,000 IU vitamin D has been taken by mouth daily for up to three years. A dose of 4,000 IU has been taken by mouth daily for one year. An initial dose of 200,000 IU of vitamin D3 has been taken by mouth, followed by 200,000 IU one month later, and 100,000 IU monthly.
For the treatment of respiratory infections, 2,000 IU per kilogram of body weight has been taken by mouth daily for three days.

Jari,

Sorry you're having to deal with it. I don't think diet will affect the flu much because it effectively stops the production of most digestive enzymes so that you can't digest anything until the intestinal inflammation recedes.

Gabes,

I think your rate estimate is low. An adult therapeutic dose of vitamin D to treat (or prevent) the flu is more like 120,000–150,000 IU per day for about 3 or 4 days.

THanks Tex

that is why I bolded the reference to 2,000 iu per kilo of body weight for three days
60 kg person = 120,000 iu (60kg = 132 pounds)
70kg person = 140,000 iu (70kg = 154 pounds)
etc

Hi, Jari. I'm not of any assistance but I'm sorry that you're feeling so poorly. I hope you feel better soon!

Hey Jari, so sorry to hear this. Was it strain A or B? My daughter and husband had strain B and it took them 8 days to get out of bed. 2 weeks to feel like theirselves. I increased my vitamin d during that time myself to keep my health up.

My son is sick now and said he feels like he has the flu. I said probably not, because it should be over this time of year. I think it's strep....needless to say I'm stressed and have D. We will find out in a little bit. Never a dull moment in the summer for us!

You will be in my thoughts and prayers for a quick recovery!!

Dang Jari,
I hope you are feeling better today (Tuesday 2 days after your post).

I got that darn stuff in early March...it shut me down for a good 5 days and I still took it easy for 2-3 more after that. As far as eating or drinking I just drank broth or water and got lots of rest...to heck with food!

Hopefully I now have some antibodies floating around in me ready to take care of that bit of strain should it happen to pass by me again!

Take care, it is good to hear from you.

Well, 10 days later, and I feel somewhat human, but I have no energy! This really knocked me for a whirl! I am on the downside of it, but they told me with my MC that it would most likely take awhile for me to get back to 100 percent. Food still doesn't taste very good so it takes a lot for me to eat. I was already having diarrhea issues so I'm sure I'll be totally starting over again when this is all over!

Thank you all for the well wishes. When it rains, it sure seems like it pours! I feel like I've had more than my share now.............let's spread it around! :)

I have no idea what strain it was. I mainly went in to see if what I had was viral or if there might be something else going on that I might need a little help with. All viral, of course. Let it run its course! That's what I'm doing. Good thing there was NOTHING on my agenda for June!
