Hello! It's Been a While.....

Post by Hazelbird »

I haven't been back to the boards in months due to a strict 'internet budget' while we were RVing in the southern States. (We're full time RVers.)

My update is that I'm managing. Most days I 'relieve' everything in the first hour in the morning and then I'm fine for the day. No WD. Very little pain anymore. I do burp a lot though.

I do flare about once a month or 6 weeks but it lasts only a day with a low dose of Peptobismol. I cannot identify the cause though! I eat the same diet and have a relatively stress-free retired life.

I do have a couple of questions:

1. Doesn't magnesium cause diarrhea?

2. I've developed burning, tingling, itchy, peeling lips and wondered if it's related to my Lymphocytic Colitis. All that's been recommended is OTC cortisone cream. I don't wear makeup and only use organic coconut oil to moisturizer. (I'm not on any drugs.) It's so bad that it actually disturbs my sleep. Any thoughts?

Glad to be back now that we're settled in Canada for the summer. I'll poke around and see what's new.

Thanks!

Hi Hazel,

Welcome back (as Louis Rukeyser used to say on Wall Street Week on TV every week). Incidentally, note that he had a high forehead — a sign that he probably was a celiac. To get back on topic, I'll try to answer your questions.

Yes and no. Yes, if you take the wrong type, such as magnesium oxide, or too much of some types, such as more that roughly 250 mg of magnesium citrate. No if you take a reasonable dose (no more than 500 or 600 mg of a type such as chelated magnesium (magnesium glycinate), or if you use topical magnesium such as magnesium oil or lotion on your skin, or an Epsom salt soak or Epsom salt bath.

Maybe. Chron's disease is known to have such oral manifestations. But you might be allergic to something around you or something you're ingesting. Or you might have a vitamin B-12 deficiency due to the malabsorption problem associated with MC. Since you don't use cosmetics, it's kind of tough to pin it on an allergy (tough to track down the cause) unless you're allergic to coconut oil.

HI Hazel

Since pin pointing the rough lips is a mystery this is what I have been using for a year now....Lipsyl works really well and free of everything since I can't have most things on my skin... https://www.ebay.com/i/182508154431?chn=ps&dispItem=1

Glad to hear you are doing relatively well over all though!

Welcome back!

1. Tex has answered this question - there are good MC safe options for getting good doses of Magnesium
- Doctors best Magnesium Glycinate (available online)
- Dr Dean ReMag product is a highly absorbable magnesium liquid
- Topical magnesium

2. the reaction you describe re your lips could be histamine/allergy related. does it happen after eating or after brushing your teeth?
some people can react to coconut oil so maybe stop the coconut oil for a week and see if it improves.

excess histamine is a big issues for MC'ers. Fixing magnesium and B6 deficiency has resolved my lifelong allergy issues.
please read Erica's post in this section

hope this helps

Thank you all so much for your thoughtful answers.

1. I've been using Magnesium Citrate 150mg twice a day and occasionally doing an Epsom Salts foot soak. (No bathtub in the RV!) Perhaps I'll reduce it until this bottle is gone and source Magnesium Glycinate. And more foot soaks! Ahhhhhh......

2. I finally googled my symptoms and discovered various kinds of Cheilitis, or inflammation of the lips. The photos match me! Various causes too: infection, allergy, toxin, medication, nutritional deficiency (!), chronic inflammatory illnesses (!), and so on. Can be acute or chronic. Treatments but no cure. I read some forum suggestions about Cheilitis and one suggested topical yogurt with active cultures. Since my lips were really burning today, in desperation I tried it with good Greek yogurt and within an hour they were considerably soothed! Not a cure but some relief was sure welcomed. I stopped the coconut oil and need to change toothpastes. I found 'Organic Healing Balm' by The Honest Co. that is plant based, hypoallergenic, with no parabens, etc, etc, etc. It has Calendula in it which was also recommended. I hate to go to a doctor because they'll just push drugs and cortisone cream.

It's so annoying to get such weird diseases! People can openly discuss so many ailments but Lymphocytic Colitis and Cheilitis not so much.

Thanks again for your caring responses. Hope everyone is doing well.

If you've been having some D, switching to magnesium glycinate should help. Some people are more sensitive/responsive to magnesium than others.

Trying some other oil other than coconut as a lip balm might be worth a try.

Yes, we're lucky to have such "rare" diseases. LOL.
