Peanut Oil, Soybean Oil and Five Guys Burgers

Hi Everyone,

Ten days ago, after not eating out for five months, we went to Five Guys for a burger and fries. Being gluten, soy, dairy and egg free, I read up on it first. I knew they were very good about gluten free and have a dedicated frier that only fried french fried, not other breaded things. Research showed that they use only 100% peanut oil and I thought, well I can't go because peanuts are a legume like soy beans. But then I read on other allergy sites that the FDA approves 100% peanut oil and highly refined soybean oil with those who have a soy sensitivity.

My burger and fries caused me no problem. Five Guys were very good about changing gloves with my order, wrapping my burger in lettuce (I didn't eat the lettuce as I haven't tried much of that yet) and used a knife and fork instead.

Can anyone else speak to this?

Some can tolerate it, some cannot. The problem is that the FDA and the "experts" assume that the oil refining process is a perfect process, but out in the real world perfect processes do not exist. For some of us, only a tiny amount of protein is all it takes to cause a reaction. I'll continue to avoid it.

This is similar to the claims that celiacs can safely eat gluten-free oats. Oats make me (and most people who are gluten-sensitive) sick as a dog. Cleans me out in about 3 or 4 hours.

But yes, most of the time you can get away with peanut oil. Soy oil is so unhealthy that I wouldn't eat any even if it were safe.

me personally, have not been able to add anything peanut back into my eating plan.

I've had no problem eating GF burger (no bun) and fries from Five Guys and I eat about 5 of their peanuts too.

Some folks on our forum would have problem with the fries.

I've eaten at Five Guys in about 4 different states and they are probably one of the best restaurant chains for training about gluten sensitivity. Their workers are well trained on the glove change thing.

I had a bad experience at a downtown restaurant last Friday night. Harrys. I ordered from the gluten free menu and had to send my meal back 3 times. Manager on her own came over and said my meal would be complimentary. It didn't really matter...it was such a bad experience. The other 5 people I was with had finished their meals and a correct meal had still not been delivered for me. I went home in tears. I told the boyfriend my story...in tears. He mentioned that Five Guys and Outback both do a consistently good job on the rare times I eat out.

I haven't eaten at Five Guys since I have LC, but I had their fries prior to my diagnosis. My stomach hurt a lot! I've spoken with other people who can't tolerate their fries so I would imagine peanut oil has an adverse affect on many people, even those without MC.

Brandy, I'm sorry about your experience at Harry's. That is awful and I feel your pain.

Brandy, I'm sorry about your bad experience, too at Harry's. That's why I'm so leery of eating out. Twice I've gone to lunch with family with only iced tea in front of me, watching everyone else eat. There was nothing on the menu that I was willing to try. I think one of the hardest things with MC is not being able to eat out once in awhile. Eating at home is easy for me now, after several months. Yes, it's the same foods over and over but worth it. Going to a restaurant I used to take for granted. We have a family reunion coming up in KS in July. There are three restaurant meals planned. I'll no doubt eat out of our cooler before I go.

I'll check out Outback.

Susan, I sometimes eat out once a week. I wouldn't, but I do it for my husband. If I order a plain steak or hamburger and steamed broccoli most restaurants are good with it. I stress no seasoning, butter, etc. I also take GlutenEase beforehand to ward off any adverse affects. Last evening we ate at the same restaurant we were at last week, with the same server. My broccoli had butter on it, not a lot, but I could see it. I ate it anyway because I sort of wanted to see what butter would do to me. I was fine. Gluten is another story, I will never, ever chance it.

Hi Susan,

I've never had a problem with Outback. My understanding is they have a different prep area for GF meals. The servers are always extremely nice and I think they must have significant training.

Good to know about Five Guys and Outback. I've eaten at Outback since my diagnosis but not at Five Guys.

We tend to eat lunch out a lot on weekends. I've also had very good experiences with Mellow Mushroom. Their GF pizza crust is actually better than most gluten based crusts, I find.

Nice to know about Mellow Mushroom. I'll wait until I am further along. I can't eat the cheese and haven't delved into tomatoes or tomato sauce yet. It would sure be nice to have a slice of pizza somewhere in my future!

Thanks for tip on Mellow Mushroom.

AVOID APPLEBYS. You get an allergan binder to order from. Staff is clueless. ALMOST EVERYTHING THEY SELL HAS EITHER GLUTEN AND/OR SOY IN IT. Their foods are heavily processed with gluten and soy. The only thing safe at lunch was applesauce. Baked potatoes are only available at dinner, not lunch.
Virtually all of the proteins that they sell are marinated in either gluten and/or soy off site. There is no such thing as a "plain" piece of chicken or meat or fish here.

I eat at Five Guys at least once a week. Have never had a problem. They are well trained. I can also eat at Chipotle (rice bowl). At IHop I can have bacon and their fries (they are the only two things on the menu that are dairy, gluten, and soy free). I've eaten at Outback with no problem, and that's pretty much the extent of my eating out.

I am able to eat at Outback with no problems, too.

The other place I can eat is In-N-Out Burger. It's not on the menu, but you can ask for a "protein burger", which comes wrapped in lettuce. I ask for just lettuce and tomato, and no sauce. Their fries are safe, too. They cut the potatoes on site, and cook them in a dedicated fryer, so they aren't cross-contaminated. I haven't asked what kind of oil they use, but it doesn't cause me any trouble.

I've never dared eat at Five Guys because of the peanuts. I have a peanut-allergic grandson, so we just tend to avoid any place that has peanuts out. Maybe I should give it a try if others here have been able to eat there. It would be nice to expand my eating-out horizons.
