Need advice regarding Asacol please

Post by mcnomore »

I have watery D twice a month approximately, but the rest of the time I tend to be more constipated now after many years of loose poops. I alternate between normans and not going for maybe 2-3 days and the D.

I had watery D just before diagnosis, but that stopped after going on Asacol back then.

Is it a good idea to go back on Asacol for the D? I'm afraid to leave my house because I might have an accident.

Thanks for any feedback.

That is exactly the cycle of reactions that I had back when my MC was active. The D stopped with a very strict diet, so I'm guessing that your diet is being cross-comtaminated with gluten or it's being otherwise compromised. Or something in your environment is perpetuating the inflammation in your intestines.

Asacol is not the best form of mesalamine for MC patients because it contains lactose. Still, it works for some people. Mesalamine (Asacol, Pentasa, Apriso, Lialda, etc.,) is not an ideal choice of inflammatory medications because it's a derivative of salicylic acid (the main ingredient in aspirin). Still, it works for some people. Mesalamine may make make the constipation part of your cycle of reactions worse, while it helps with the diarrhea. Compared with budesonide, it's slower to control diarrhea and usually less effective. Budesonide would probably make constipation symptoms more unbearable than mesalamine, but I'm just guessing.

Confusing, I know, but it's a confusing (complicated) disease.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thanks Tex, yes so confusing.

The D began a little over a year ago, about a year after I stopped taking Asacol. In January 2017 I stopped having loose poops everyday with just the normans or constipation now and D continuing a couple of times a month. I feel great until the D hits, then my bp shoots up at the same time. Usually after D x2 I feel fine, bp back down to normal and I can eat.
