So true and very frustrating. We were reading related articles and came across this one:
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/artic ... ealed.aspx
I am always wary of accepting anything as truth via the internet. Is Dr. Mercola a reputable source? After reading this my husband dies not want to take a statin but try the natural route/diet modifications.
I'm really at a loss as far as what I support.
I would imagine the same statin concerns apply to me by taking the cholestyramine. I wonder how this will effect my cholesterol which does not need any lowering.

Hey Deb,
For help on your decision, check out the book The Great Cholesterol Con by Dr. Malcom Kendrick, I think you will find some useful information there. There have been no scientific studies that show Statins prolonging life or helping prevent heart attacks/disease. Hard decisions when your beloved family is involved.......thinking of you and hubby!

Deb,
Dr. Mercola thrives on sensationalism, but he's generally truthful. A lot of doctors agree with his position on statins. Most doctors who agree with him are are not part of the "establishment good old boys club".
Thanks for posting. It reminded me that I need to start taking ubiquinol (ubiquinol is the oxidized form of CoQ10 recommended for anyone older than 25) because I'm taking a statin due to the fact that I'm a bona fide stroke risk.

Deb,
Dr Mercola is not the only one writing (and warning) about long term issues with STatins for high cholesterol treatment
https://drpompa.com/additional-resource ... nd-statins
- if you want the quick fix in blood test results then statins are likely to provide that
- if you want long term good health and resolve root cause of the issue - then eating plan changes, lifestyle changes and the right supps are the way to go.

long story shortA Better Solution to High Cholesterol
The problem with modern medicine’s approach to balancing cholesterol levels is really the same problem that we see time and again in mainstream medical practice: it doesn’t get to the underlying cause (R1). Be sure to listen to our podcast with Dr. Wolfson where we go into detail on what we believe to be the true cause behind LDL build-up in the blood. If inflammation and toxicity came to mind, then you’re on the right track.
I’ve spoken and written about inflammation countless times because it’s vital to understand the relationship between cellular inflammation and malfunction in the body. There certainly is a connection between LDL levels in the blood and arterial damage, but doctors aren’t testing properly or offering treatments that can help you get well.

Thank you for all of your comments, links, and suggestions. I've learned a lot about the topic which is helpful. Now to learn/accept the lesson that I can't "fix" someone else's problems if they aren't willing to commit. It just creates a burden that I have no control over or ability to change.

exactly Deb - use your precious energy for yourself and your children.
the other aspect - there is a difference between 'fixing' and 'healing' (another layer to add to your mental ponderings and acceptance on this topic)

It's another learning lesson. I'm angry because I can't imagine life without my husband/best friend but also don't want to add to his stress by giving him the stink eye every time he eats something I don't approve of. I made plenty of poor choices when I first started my modified diet so I know it's not easy. He is making an effort so that's a great start. He is receptive to the supplements and is trying so I am thankful for that.

Deb,
Way back on June 9 I said that I would post my statin use results. I got them today, so here they are. I've been taking generic Lipitor (atorvastatin calcium 80 mg) for about 6 weeks now. When I started, my total cholesterol (TC) was 234 (when I had the stoke). My low density lipoprotein (LDL) was 168. My LDL result has been climbing steadily for the past couple of years. I'm not sure why.
After the six weeks on atorvastatin, my LDL is now 72 (the neurologist's goal is 70) and my TC is 131. So yep, the stuff has been effective on LDL.
Feel free to share this with your husband. And in case it matters, you can point out that I can't recommend a stroke. I've tried it, and so far this one hasn't been near as much fun as I expected.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Well, I still have 2 more points to go to make the doctors happy. By the time they check it next time there's no telling how low it will be. I don't think I want to leave my TC this low for the long-term.

Correction:
I've been taking the atorvastatin for about 10 months, not 6. In my previous math I somehow missed a month. But heck, I can blame
my math mistake on the stoke and surely get away with it.
