What to take after an antibiotic?

Post by jlbattin »

So, I'm really still having a hard time getting over this flu and went to my doctor today as I felt like crap and I'm trying to get well so I can have my eye surgery in a couple of weeks. They checked me for pnuemonia........nothing........but there is something......some secondary infection or something..........anyway, he gave me a z Pack antibiotic..........I've taken it before with no issues................just wondering if there's anything I can do or take afterwards or during to not kill all my good bacteria...........do I need to up my magnesium and vitamin D3? Anyone else have any other tips?

Azithromycin is pretty good stuff. If you're already taking vitamin D and magnesium, your regular dose should be sufficient. If you want to take something else, a good probiotic following the treatment regimen is generally recommended by the "experts". But of course that doesn't mean that it will help anything. If the antibiotic decides to eradicate your gut bacteria, the probiotic can't stop it. If you think you might be at risk of a C. diff infection after the antibiotic treatment, taking a probiotic for a couple of weeks afterward might help. Personally, I think probiotics are made to sell, so I never use them.

Hey Jari,

Sorry to hear about your 2nd eye surgery! You are right though, now you know what to expect and that is definitely half of "it". I've had great luck with the probiotic Prescript Assist. Its actually helped with urgency and formed BM's. You can get it on Amazon and it is pricey but worth it in my opinion. It is soil based, which is important. If you decide to try it, the best time is before bed a couple hours after eating so it can go to work. Keep us posted!

P.S. I need to go back in the archives and look at that cooler again. I need one!

Hi Jari,

I am sorry you are going through this again. I'd probably take a probiotic as an insurance policy.

I am a big fan of Saccharomyces Boulardii. I 've been taking the one from Jarrow (available on Amazon) for many years. I stopped taking it a few times over the years and every time, I have a major, debilitating flare-up starting a week later, though I am not sure the exact nature of my problems (MC? Crohn's??). S. Boulardii is used in some cases of C. Diff infection (along with medication and under medical supervision - don't mess with C diff)

Checkout Wikipedia's entry on S. Boulardii (they mention antibiotic-associated diarrhea):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saccharomyces_boulardii

and an article claiming benefit for kids with microscopic colitis:

SB Boullardi has worked well for me

this article also has some good info
http://health.usnews.com/health-news/bl ... ntibiotics

Saccharomyces boulardii lyo (Florastor) is always a good idea: There are several reasons why I recommend Florastor first and foremost. For starters, it’s a yeast, not a bacteria. That means it doesn’t get killed by antibiotics and can survive in full force to its intended destination. Secondly, it's among the best-studied strains of probiotic and has been shown to have particular benefit in preventing antibiotic associated diarrhea in general – and protecting against the dreaded C. Diffinfection in particular. For my patients with a history of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, Florastor is the only probiotic I usually recommend. This is because it can’t overgrow in the small bowel in the same way that bacteria can in susceptible individuals. Furthermore, it does not require fermentable (read: gassy) “prebiotic” fibers to thrive in the gut, and therefore may be better tolerated for sensitive individuals

Thanks for the replies and advice. I took Florastor before MC............I will try it again. It worked really well back then. I'm struggling between probably the antibiotic, stress of upcoming eye surgery next week, and I wasn't stable before this, so willing to try whatever will/might work. Am looking forward to getting surgery behind me so I can try to get things under control again!

The only Probiotic I have ever taken is from the Dr. Mercola site....it has 70 billion in them for a price of $29 and 30 day supply which will carry me for two - 2 week servings and they last quite a while in the fridge.

I haven't investigated the yeast probiotic, and wonder if it would affect the candida yeast we seem to get an abundance of.

I thought the same about SB Boullardi and candida, but it doesn't cause issues...

I am thankful to see this thread. I think I have what appears to be an abscess starting, and have a dentist appointment scheduled. I (of course) am very concerned about taking an antibiotic. I don't remember the last time I needed to use one (probably 15 to 18 years ago).
