Questions About Mag/D

Post by Pam V »

I wanted to ask your opinion about the medications that I am taking. After re-reading the book, I saw that it is recommended to take all of the Budesonide in the AM, rather than spaced throughout the day. I am taking 2/day, which I now take first thing in the AM. For Magnesium, I purchased Kirkman Magnesium Bisglycinate Chelate after seeing someone on the board recommended it as one that doesn't cause D. I was afraid that if I found the ReMag an unpleasant taste that I wouldn't be faithful about using it and couldn't wrap my brain around how much mag oil to use if I went that route. I take 2 Magnesium Bisglycinate Chelate (100 mg each) and 2 Vitamin D (1,000 IU each) three times a day - total of 600 mg Mag and 6,000 IU Vit. D. I also take Allergy Medication daily (I developed horrible seasonal allergies as an adult) and take Cetrizine Hydrochloride 10 mg (Zyrtec) in the morning. I did also find a multi vitamin that is gluten, dairy, and soy free and I take that most mornings. I am 5'3'' and weigh just under 120 lbs.

Could you give me an opinion as to whether I am on track with the medications that I am taking. Although I took supplements prior to my LC diagnosis (fish oil, vit D, daily multi - fish oil discontinued when D started in April), I did not take a lot of medication and don't want to be taking too much or the wrong combinations of any supplements.

I appreciate any input and guidance you may be able to share. Thank-you!

Hi Pam,

What you are taking sounds reasonable. However, in view of your other post about the bone broth, 600 mg of even magnesium glycinate might be contributing to softer stools or D. The RDA is about half that for women. As long as you are taking at least the RDA, you are getting plenty, because this is in addition to the magnesium that's already in your diet. Someone who weighed 180 lbs. might use 600 mg of magnesium with no problems, while at your weight it might be a bit too much. It can depend on how well you absorb magnesium. You might do better with 300–400 mg. Spacing the magnesium out during the day, with meals, as you are doing, is the best way to go about it. Magnesium is best absorbed with food, but in a pinch it can be taken without food with no problems.

Fish oil will tend to soften the stool, especially in larger doses, but up to a couple thousand mg shouldn't have any major negative effect.

You're very welcome,

Tex

Hi Pam,

In general until we are in solid remission less is best when it comes to supplements. Like Tex said, your protocol sounds reasonable. I'm a 130 pound woman who takes 400 mg of mag glycinate with occasional Epsom salt baths.

While you are on budesonide the budesonide will protect against problematic supplements. When you get off of the budesonide consider eliminate the fish oil and the vitamin for 3-4 weeks and then slowly add them back in. Keep taking the antihistamine while getting off of budesonide to help with histamine flare up. You might consider increasing your antihistamine dose a bit for about 5 days or so when getting off of budesonide.

Ignore internet marketing hype about various supplements that "heal" the gut. Save your money for a vacay!

Repost when you are getting ready to get off of budesonide and we can help. In general forum folks do better with a 4-5 or 6 month stay on budesonide (over the 3 months recommended by the American docs). Forum members do better with a long slow taper when getting off. 2 pills for awhile, then 1 for a while, then 1 every other day for awhile then 1 every third day for awhile etc.

Welcome to the forum, you are at the right place!

Thank-you!

Thank-you Tex and Brandy. I will drop down on the Mag and D to 400 mg Mag and 4,000 IU D. I'll definitely repost when it's time to taper off and I will appreciate your help and suggestions. My GI said that I can tell her how long I want to stay on Budesonide. I did 9mg for 1 month and am planning (based upon what I've read on this board) to continue at 6mg for 2 months (until the end of August). Then my plan is to do 3 mg/day for several months and go to alternating to every other days with the hope of fully tapering off around the first of the year. Fingers crossed!!

I appreciate your help and the knowledge and support of this board. I am grateful that the diagnosis wasn't worse but do get seriously depressed at time about food choices. My hobby for years has been cooking (especially baking) and I miss it so.

Thank-you again -

Pam

But Pam.

MC doesn't prevent us from cooking — it just makes be more creative with our cooking.

Good Point, Tex!

Post by Pam V »

Tex, you bring up a very good point! I'm sure that once I can figure out what I can eat safely, then I might find some creative ways to keep cooking and baking! I think that I'm getting emotional as I'm getting ready to send child #2 off to college and then throw LC on top of that.... Anyways, thank you for your support and for helping me to stay positive!

Pam
have you looked at the meal ideas in the "Dee's kitchen" and "Meal Suggestions" sections of the forum??

having a passion for cooking is a good asset for sorting out your MC management plan.

I'll Check Out Dee's Kitchen!

Post by Pam V »

Thank-you, Gabes! I'll take a closer look at the recipes and ideas in Dee's Kitchen. I looked briefly a few weeks ago but haven't really had the time to sort it through. I'm thinking I should stay on rice/turkey, chicken, fish, or beef for awhile. I appreciate your suggestions and look forward to checking out the recipes and ideas:)

even staying on the safe proteins you mention, you may be able to find some cooking ideas to get some variety into your eating plan

roasting the turkey or chicken (either whole or pieces on the bone) with one or two safe veges is very flavoursome
cooking the fish in coconut oil can give it great subtle flavour
I broil my chicken in the home made bone broth, keeps it moist and gives it a bit more flavour etc.

Pam,

Our recent Foundation newsletter has a good article on supplements this quarter. Click the Foundation link at top and you will have to click around on the site to get the latest newsletter to read. It is also worth it to register for the newsletters to come to you by email. You get one 2-4 times a year (not a lot in your in box.)
