Oral Magnesium question
Hi all,
Is it possible to titrate your way up to the recommended dose of Magnesium? I started Dr. Best oral and it was too much for me to take orally before bedtime (cause D). I switched to topical in May, but I am starting to get some irritation for it.
Also, as your Magnesium level increases, can oral magnesium become more tolerable?
I was thinking of starting with 1/2 pill of Dr Best every other day, until I work my way up to the recommended 2 pills.
Thanks,
Angela

hi there Angela
what sort of irritation are you getting from the topical magnesium? what parts of the body are you applying it?
re the oral magnesium, it is best to spread the doses through out the day, ie with meals etc. Very good idea to start on the 1/2 pill option and work up slowly to the minimum 2 pills
so far as tolerating oral magnesium more so, this has so many variables, everybody is different.
one thing we have observed is that some people do not absorb tablet forms of mag very well, and only saw improvement in magnesium deficiency and their bodies optimising the use of magnesium when they swapped across to a more absorbable product like the Dr Dean ReMag...
hope this helps

Angela,
Note that the Doctors Best magnesium glycinate has 100 mg of magnesium per pill, not 200 mg. 200 mg refers to the "dose". If you check the back label you'll see that a "dose" is 2 tablets. It's OK to take some before bedtime (it relaxes muscles), but it's best to spread it out during the day, taking it with meals for better absorption.
Oral magnesium can only cause D if you are not absorbing it. When it stays in your digestive tract, it can be a laxative. If it gets into your blood (IOW if it's absorbed from the digestive tract or the skin), it can't cause D.
The fact that the topical magnesium is irritating to your skin is claimed to be a sign that you are very deficient. That should decrease as time goes on, as you reduce your deficiency. Sometimes a different brand is less irritating.

Thanks Gabes and Tex. I have been applying it to my neck (per doctor direction due to headaches, she thought it would help with muscle tension). Also to low back, and calf muscles. It just developed a mild rash around my neck. I know the skin is a bit tender there. I don't have trouble with burning as long as I don't do it after a shower.
Since I still had my bottle of Mg, I thought about giving the oral route another try.
Thanks again!

I have the same issue with my neck - especially in summer when I am sweating a bit more and the pores a bit more open. go for the shoulders, top of arms, belly, top of legs and lower back..
also good to use both oral and topical. if you are not absorbing all of the oral, using the topical as well is a good way to ensure your body is getting good amounts.

ionic magnesium
I use a liquid called ionic magnesium. From Trace Minerals. I buy it on amazon. It is in dropper form. It tastes terrible but I put it in some safe apple juice and down it. I take ~800mg a day divided doses. I tried putting in my water and sipping during the day, the taste was fine, but i became very nauseated. I think it was a histamine response. It is not as strong as Remag. It absorbs quickly in my stomach....not having to go to my intestine. The other product I use is "Pure and Potent Magnesium Oil from Sunfood" which it is actually a spray. This doesn't itch or leave a heavy residue and I can use it after showering. It is a little pricey but worth it. I buy this on Amazon also.
Hang in there..... This support group saved my life and my sanity!!!!

I've found that I can only tolerate the spray Lifeflo oil on my legs and calves and no where else really....BUT I have been religious about putting either enough on or in me to account for at least 600 mg a day regardless of type ;-)
Right now I am doing well with KAL Gel tab 200mg. It is a little big looking but once moistened it gets slimy and drinks right down and I can do that 3 times a day and get away with it now that I am starting my 3rd year of healing. I also apply Mag lotion to my legs and arms when I feel the need for a bit of skin moisturizing. At times I will alternate and put a dash of ReMag in my drink what ever that may be at the time too.
I try to fake my body out often, LOL, not giving it the same way all the time
