23andme Test

Post by jlbattin »

So, I just found this little gem on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss ... =23+and+me

I read somewhere that this rarely, if ever, goes on any kind of a sale. Thought there might be some that are interested like me!

That's a good price, but it's kind of tricky figuring out what you're actually getting for your money. I found their ancestry stuff to be useless, (who cares what percent of you might be neanderthal, or if you're kin to the movie stars Clyde Clod or Mia Sparrow) but the actual genetic data was priceless. Of course I got it back when it was still the original price of a hundred bucks. Yes, the test rarely goes on sale. The $79 deal says you save 20 bucks. The $179 deal says you save 20 bucks. Apparently the $179 deal gets you a bunch of data on relatives if you like that sort of thing.

I would like to give this to my DH for his birthday. Can either of you refer me to a reliable site or name of it?

The $179

Will get you two full reports one regarding Good/Bad medicines for your gene type (which is a really extensive list and was really helpful to me), the second report was if you may be prone to a medical condition and lists numerous conditions and your snap shot at the time you do your DNA analysis to which you may or may not have an occurrence to. I say snap shot because I feel epigenetics alter DNA and if one plays their cards differently medical conditions I feel can be change based on lifestyle.

The $179 also gives you upfront information if you have any possible gene variant that can be passed down thru your blood line. This can be of use to those that want to know if they have higher risks for pregnancy issues. This report also explains many situations based on your analysis.

I got lots of information that correlated to the Promethease data and Genetic Genie (Methylation) so was nice to cross reference things and make a plan for Me

The $79 will get you only Ancestry type information and it is so limited I don't think I would be happy with it, but if one is Tech savvy and will put this cheaper test into Promethease and gain information from it on their own, then it would be a good inexpensive way to do it.

23andMe has partnered with Ancestry in a way that Ancestry will let you upload 23andMe RAW data (I heard this was in the process so if it isn't up an running just yet it will be).

I too paid the $100 for the original test. It was about the time when the FDA limited their reports. I did use Prometheus and others to get my info. They have since added some significant ones for late onset Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. I think it is worth the money (and I've never seen a reduced price before on it).

Attn: those outside of the USA, these type of report offers etc are only available to USA residents...

for everyone - spending the money to get the full package where you get the full data that you can use for external reporting is worth it - more and more reports are becoming available as time goes on, and as they do you can use your 23andme results in these reports.

What I noticed about ordering from the actual site or Amazon is that the shipping is free on Amazon if you are a prime member. The other has an $8.95 shipping on 23andme.

The 23andMe Ancestry version is $49 right now (on Amazon Prime Day).

I've seen several responses to questions on Amazon (from 23andMe) saying that regardless of which test you buy, the raw data is the same. In other words, you could get all the raw data from this one and input it at Promethease or wherever. That's how it appears to me ... the only difference is you don't get the health reports from 23andMe (which sound pretty useless).

Kristen
from the articles i have seen, doing the test through ancestry is that they can use the data for external purposes
doing it direct via 23andme does provide an extra layer of privacy

and some of the health reports are quite useful

I'm still a little leery of the privacy stuff, and the vast amount of data seems overwhelming. But I figured I'd mention it in case anyone's interested. $49 would be pretty cheap for the 23andMe test if you do indeed get all of the raw data.

From the Q&A section on the Amazon page ...
Question: Is there a difference in the raw data of the ancestry service and the health + ancestry service? are there the same numbers of snp included?
Answer: The raw data is the same for both our Ancestry Service and Health + Ancestry Service.

Yep, that's a bona fide bargain. Thanks for the tip.

That's a great price in order to obtain RAW Data.... ;-) Promethease is a great tool too to read it with too.

I really enjoyed my expanded version of 23andMe reports though...it saved me hours of hunting and pecking time learning about my results.

True.

Did you get yours done before everything was revamped though (before the FDA shutdown)? I've seen comments from people that the current reports are more fluff than substance, although obviously I haven't done it myself.
