I've been reading a book called Unlocking the Obesity Code by Dr Fung and so much of it makes sense. I am not obese (101 lbs to 106 lbs depending on flares) but am interested in preventing insulin resistance and metabolic disorders that could result as well as eliminating fat around organs.

He recommends no snacking between meals and a long break between supper and breakfast to stop insulin spikes. He suggests a 24 hour fast (and does more with patients in his clinic).

Has anyone here with MC tried fasting? So far I've stopped my snacking completely and am feeling better. I drink water and decaf green tea only. My rationale is that it gives my gut a chance to rest for longer periods. I have yet to do the 24 hour fast but it makes sense to me that it would help ease the inflammation. What do you think?

I have been using the dave asprey bulletproof fasting guidelines to 'get ketosis' happening (burning fat)
I have tried it a couple of time before but never had success, this time i have found the sweet spot! and lost weight with minimal effort per say. (33pounds over the past 5 months)
as i type this it is one of my semi fasting days where i started the day with coconut oil in my coffee, I am doing housework chores and trying to go as long as possible before eating (this works for me and burns fat)

dave asprey has some great info on the bulletproof website and blog

I think the ketosis is working well for me this time compared to previous attempts as I;
- have better nutritional balance and less toxins etc. my thyroid is operating better, hormones are better
- no histamine issues since fixing magnesium deficiency and B6 deficiency
- good levels of magnesium regular insulin better
- good levels of magensium means better pancreas function (which means i digest protein and fats better)
- less toxins and biotoxins in my gut.

I have practiced intermittent fasting for about 2 years now. I no longer need to lose any weight but I continue the practice to keep insulin levels low. I use a 16/8 fasting schedule in conjunction with a low carb diet. My aim is to prevent the development of type 2 diabetes which runs in my family. I eat 2 meals a day, breakfast around 8AM and a second meal somewhere after noon and nothing after 4PM. I have read Dr Fung's book and many of his articles on his website. I have tried longer fasts but this is what seems to work best for me.

That's interesting. I follow the same basic schedule, except that I do it because I have an ileostomy and following this schedule usually prevents me from having to get up during the night to change an ostomy pouch. I was wondering why I never show any markers for diabetes or prediabetes, not even when I was severely magnesium deficient. The intermittent fasting may be the reason.

Tex - More and more in the diabetes world, or at least in the low carb diabetes world, the talk is about hyperinsulinemia which leads to high levels of blood glucose, as the driving force behind type 2 diabetes. Anything that keeps insulin levels in the body low is preventative. When Dr Fung came onto the diabetes scene he pointed out that along with what you eat and how much you eat, when you eat was an important factor in determining how insulin resistant you became. Intermittent fasting derives from this basic observation. Dr Joseph Kraft, who just recently died at the age of 95, did pioneering work on hyperinsulinemia, largely ignored. Thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear that MCers can fast. It's a big adjustment but I've already had to do that with my LC diet. More reading and research to do too.

I have fasted twice with MC to give my gut a chance to heal. One of the two times I did drink some bone broth.

A few years ago my husband and I went on the fasting diet, the 5/2 diet, to lose weight. A PBS show I watched with Michael Mosby (sp?) as host, studied fasting at different research sites. The results were a lowering of cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, etc. My internist is a fan. After several months of doing it, I had my yearly physical and not only lost weight but my labs were much better. I am not diabetic but it was impressive.

The 5/2 diet: You pick two days of the week to fast. On fast days, a man may have 600 calories and a woman 500. We picked Tuesday and Thursday. It wasn't hard. I waited until dinner to eat and my husband would eat an apple for lunch and the his dinner. The other five days, you eat normally. I felt good dong it.
