Starting to get a few tiny cracks in finger tips

Post by WhirledPeas »

I noticed three little cracked lines on my pointing finger on my left hand a few days ago.
I thought I may have cut myself with a disposable razor. Now I'm noticing my other pointing finger (finger I use on phone and laptop) is starting to hurt a bit and with a magnified glass I can see there are tiny cracks on my finger and sore lines that haven't cracked yet.

I googled this for quite some time and it seems it's either a vitamin deficiency and or from environment or products you're using or various health issues. With dealing with this MC flare, I am peeing etc more than usual so washing my hands more and at night taking epsom salt baths which could dry out your hands more. I put antibiotic ointment on the first finger a few days ago with a band aid and it seemed to help but the more I use the finger it gets a bit sore again.

I'm on Budesonide 9 mg since June 7.
Eating turkey tenderloins cooked in EVOO (certified real OO), minute rice and GF boxed chicken broth since last Wednesday when I made a mistake liquid wise and got D. Before that I was eating yellow potatoes instead of the rice.

I'm awaiting D3 and sublingual B12 liquid in the mail. Various websites listed things like Vitamin C or any of the Vitamin B deficiencies among other things and health problems. Going to use the shea butter based product that I got in the mail from Hugo Naturals and wear cotton gloves hoping that will help. Maybe put ointment on the one with a band aid again. I need to moisturize my hands more than once a day. I'm switching out my soap by the sinks with the new bars I got from Hugo Naturals that are moisturizing and soy free.

Any advice? I don't want this to get worse. NEVER had this before. Even in 2002 when I had major GI issues.

Thanks all!

I find pure lanolin good for skin issues on fingers... (i buy liquid version from iHerb)

it has happened to me, mostly when my hands are spending more time in water /weather.
the skin on my fingers and around my nails has been roughish due to handling fire wood and doing tasks around the farm.

my guess is, based on the extra hand washing coupled with ongoing inflammation and a few deficiencies that you are more susceptible.

My fingers cracked with eczema as did my daughter's. It could be quite painful. I haven't had trouble for years but my daughter still does, especially when she is in situations where her hands get wet a lot (she was a food/beverage manager). Mayo advised her to use Dove soap and try to keep her hands drier.

Oral vitamin C can be problematic for the gut and cause D. I'm not sure where you live but air conditioning in the summer can make dryness worse.
Agree to concentrate on what the above three posters suggested.

Thank you everyone for the good advice. Better soap, more moisturizing and using gloves or paper towels if using disinfectant wipes for the counters, etc.

I've had a rough 7 days trying to get back stable from D episode last Wednesday plus neck shoulder pain from my car accident in late Feb, stress and minor activity. PT twice a week is helping a bit. I'm disappointed today. I've been so careful about timing my meals and not drinking 40 minutes before or after eating. Just turkey, minute rice and broth. Only thing different today was that I added 5 TBS of the broth the turkey was cooked in that has EVOO in it. Since Friday I've just had plain GF broth from the box. Last two days I've dealt with nausea and IBS colon feeling after going but formed BMs. Today I had a formed normal BM and then after eating a little more ... IBS like small formed loose BM that came with nausea and discomfort down there. I don't understand what caused it. I started feeling better GI wise so I slowly ate a normal (during this flare) portion for dinner last night at 6pm and digested it fine with minor burping. Noticing the last few days it feels like I have to "go", but doesn't come out without a little effort.

Going to make a fresh batch of rice and just eat that today to give my gut a rest. Maybe too soon for yellow potatoes? I really felt like I was making progress and overcoming my daily challenges and non-GI pains. I miss those 5 days where I had a rest from all this and only minor mild symptoms. If I do liquid only today, I will have to deal with acidic stomach which happens to me on an empty stomach. Oh the choices.

Breathe...

Can't log in with smart phone.

P.S. I can't ever log in on my smart phone. It always says wrong user name or password. Can only log in on laptop. Is that an issue for others? That's why it takes me some time for reply sometimes. My laptop is hooked up to my TV so I can watch movies.

Hi Wen,

It sounds like you are improving. If you are not having WD that is huge step forwards.

Olive oil (early on) can be problematic for some. Coconut oil may be safer early on.

I'm not sure where you live. If you live in the US use olive oil that is grown/manufactured in the US (generally California for us.)
Most oils that are labeled "olive oil" on US super market shelves are adulterated with other oils.

Brandy,

Yep, mine is certified by a California entity and goes solid in the fridge after 24 hours. Its' the real deal. C1 test in June put rice in Category 1 with Category 3 being severe sensitivity. Never had a problem with rice before this flare, but ate too much of it in May trying to deal with the D that I got bloated and constipated with lots of stomach gas. Maybe that's why it showed up in Category 1. Enterolab report says don't cut out things in Category 1. The difference now is that I'm eating it with turkey whereas before I was just doing carbs for 10 days then added turkey and carrots and ended up having a lot of stomach gas and pains. Just ate turkey and broth for awhile and then had to add yellow potatoes because only meat was causing acid problems in tummy and throat. I was doing fine with EVOO before Wednesday's D episode. I haven't had liquid D since early to mid June, so Wednesday was a "new" thing. A lot of other GI symptoms and pains, but not WD until last week for one day. I did rice the next day which caused some acid problems since my tummy wasn't that full but it stopped the D and was able to add turkey back soon after.

Thank you for your kindness whenever you reply. It lifts me up. Hugs...

Hi, Wen. At the beginning of my LC journey my fingertips were cracked & bleeding but once I stopped eating gluten my hands became soft again. Now I notice if I eat too many gf cookies my fingertips will begin to crack so could it be something in a gf food that you're eating? I know how hard it is to try to figure out what is causing our issues and I hope you're able to find the cause soon.
