SIBO

Post by DebE13 »

I am at the end of week two taking doxycycline for my Lymes dx. Improvements in my bowel habits were almost immediate and have continued. That was a pleasant surprise. I had a follow up visit with my PCP on Monday since I was treated in the walk in clinic for lymes and he wants to extend the antibiotic another week to have it be a 21 day course. I checked in with my GI and now they are wondering if I've had SIBO and that's why I am back to almost normal BMs. I haven't had formed stools in ten years. Entocort and cholestyramine have not helped. I continued taking them because it did resolve my night issues but that was it.

My new problem is my internal/external hemorrhoids that are causing severe pain now that I don't have WD. It's hard to believe how painful it is and has taken the excitement out meeting Norman after such a long time. I've done a rather quick taper of Entocort from 3 pills/day to one pill every other day. I was afraid that D may return but the feeling of C coming on was equally scary. So far, everything is remaining the same. I started eating more raw veggies and fruit which I haven't done in a long time hoping it would prevent C and I haven't had any adverse problems. I even tested roasted cauliflower which never would have set well with me in the past. No issues.

I have one more week on the antibiotics and the idea slipping back to D is daunting.

As far as the Lymes, the rash is gone. I am sleeping much more than usual but it's hard to tell what's my normal fatigue and what's caused by the near 100% humidity and hot weather we've been having. I'd never make it down south- it's horrible. I tolerate Wisconsin's below zero temps better than the heat.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Deb
some options to help with the haemarroids...

coconut oil - via meals etc (also good for helping to clear biotoxins etc linked to Lyme)
also using it on the skin in that area (makes a good barrier to protect when passing poop and helping the skin to heal)

glad lyme wise, things are improving!

Thanks Gabes! I've tried all of the natural remedies and nothing has ever worked. I use coconut oil for everything from cooking, in coffee, and as my body lotion. Absolutely love it! I ended up getting anusol from my GI. It seems to have helped.

My husband is thrilled I'm doing better in the poo department. I felt bad though, he suggested we go out for pizza since I'm doing so well. Wouldnt that be nice if that was how it worked? Needless to say, I am now more aware of everything I put in my mouth than ever before. I've been leary about the raw veggies but it doesn't seeem to be an issue. I'd love a couple slices of pizza but if I am getting closer to that final piece of the puzzle- it is so not worth it.

I've been reading up on SIBO and it seems possible since the antibiotics put an immediate end to my D but the symptoms don't all seem to fit. I've never had pain, only occassional bloating, no belching..... The D has always been primarily the classic morning issue. It's hard to tell. The nurse asked about the breath testing but I'm not sure how crazy I am about another test that isn't always reliable. I've done the hydrogen breath test for lactose intolerance twice and both times it came back negative. I call tell you dairy does cause a reaction. Athough, a lactose intolerance test is not the same as casein so I shouldn't be surprised. Most nurses don't seem too familiar with it so I just leave it be when trying to explain why I avoid dairy.

I'm trying to decide if I should stop taking the cholestyramine. Is it a statin or not? I'm not thrilled to take a cholesterol lowering drug when my numbers are great. It did not improve my D previously but I started taking it again because of the potential to help with Lymes.

SIBO sounds like another issue that is difficult to eradicate but I am getting ahead of myself. I suppose for right now I should just enjoy one more week of feeling pretty normal. The timing is superb..... My workplace is in the midst of a major construction project and we are down to two toilets for a fairly large group of people plus a host of construction workers. A MCer's nightmare!

Wow, just wow. These are just some random thoughts. Since your gut clearly responded to the antibiotics (after 10 years) I'd be inclined to talk to one of the docs about their thoughts on ditching the budesonide (tapering), ditching the cholestyramine and staying on low dose of antibiotics for awhile.

Other thought is stop course of antibiotics see how it goes. If you reflare get back on the antibiotics for awhile (while ditching the budesonide and cholestyramine.

I do see where being on the cholestyramine for another week might be helpful against the lymes.

Not sure if you should take probiotics several days before stopping the antibiotics (if stopped).

Another consideration is stopping the budesonide works less well if you have to go back on it.

I question taking the SIBO test if it is questionable results. It appears you clearly responded to the antibiotics.

I'd be talking to one of the docs. Ten years of WD is a long time.

Good luck!

It looks like when/if you transition off of antibiotics low carb/or low FODMAP might help.
