Good news from Dr. Fine's office

Post by Deb »

I just spoke with a woman from Dr. Fine's office (failed to catch her name) who called me after an inquiry about my surprising last Enterolab testing. The results were as follows:
Fecal Anti-gliadin IgA 30 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units) It was 510 in 2010 and 31 in 2011
Fecal Anti-casein (cow’s milk) IgA 7 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units) It was 33 in 2010, 16 in 2011
Fecal Anti-ovalbumin (chicken egg) IgA 6 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units) It was 19 in 2011
Fecal Anti-soy IgA 7 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units) It was 44 in 2011
Mean Value 11 Antigenic Foods 8 Units (Normal Range is less than 10 Units)
While all of the foods tested can be immune-stimulating, the hierarchy of reactions detected were as follows:
Food to which there was no significant immunological reactivity:
Food to which there was some immunological reactivity (1+): oats
Food to which there was moderate immunological reactivity (2+): none
Food to which there was significant and/or the most immunological reactivity (3+):none
Food to which there was no significant immunological reactivity
Corn
Rice
Beef
Chicken
Pork
Tuna
Almond
Walnut
Cashew
White potato

I quit eating gluten in 2010 but continued to eat dairy and eggs (and tried not to include soy products in my diet) as they didn't seem to impact my MC.
I was concerned that maybe a mistake was made. She said, no, that they have seen this happen after the malabsorption improves and the leaky gut is healed. She also thinks there is a good likelihood that my knee pain is stemming from my recent glutening. There truly might be a food life after MC. :)

Thanks for sharing that information.

Wow Deb...

Seven years....incredible journey - great numbers!

I'm encouraged to see your numbers in this manner after this much time healing. It's encouraging to see with MC/LC/CC going on that if given enough time (7 years) eating lightly of eggs and dairy may still be ok at some point.

We all know that Gluten is the biggest culprit and Soy wages against us at some point..and even dairy may not settle all the time. It would be nice to one day have normal chicken egg baked into things again....we'll see.

I plan to maintain gluten free that is for sure!
Thanks for sharing your info :-)

It certainly is a journey, Erica. The woman at Dr. Fine's office did say that, unfortunately, gluten is forever. I had already kind of figured that. I think gluten was the beginning of a lot of my health issues.

I can remember being such a gluten fanatic....ate pancakes with scrambled eggs every morning for Years...oatmeal for breakfast often....even as a kid had cereal often...but I think alot of it was made with corn.

EVERY meal probably had gluten as long as I have been able to chew!

Sure hope I can convince my kids to back off the gluten as much as they can, even to the point of ridding it from their diet. I'll need more scientific proof other than my trials and tribulations most likely.

The more I heal, the better I feel, the better I feel the more energy and zest for life I have once again...it's a pretty incredible feeling from the last 10 years.

Hi Deb,

Great update!

Mom is celiac and when she was at early stages of alzheimer's she ate a complete wheat based muffin in front of her caregiver and me before we could stop her. She had such extreme knee pain from it she made her caregiver make an appointment with a knee surgeon. Caregiver and Mom went to appointment and discussed knee replacement.
She was pain free 12 weeks from date of ingestion (this was not taking any anti inflammatory supplements or foods.)

My recent knee pain was gone in about 3 weeks.

Good luck with everything. Mom and I both use a lot of ice packs.

Great update, Deb! I did the testing in 2014 and I'm going to wait a while until I do I again but now I'm really curious.

Marcia, I had never done the full panel so I just wanted to see what I might be dealing with.
Brandy, interestingly my husband and I were both glutened at the same meal (he has been GF for two years). He has never done any testing but started having digestive issues and traced them to gluten. My knee pain became intense about two weeks later. Shortly after that he developed knee pain and it is in our left knee for both of us. Really weird. We look pretty pathetic hobbling around here together. He is still active in our construction business and really "needed" his knee. He went to Mayo's Sport Medicine where of course they talked about cortisone, surgery and replacements. Thanks to some information from Monique we investigated hyaluronic acid which is essentially injections of cartilage. It used to be that you needed five injections but they now can do just one. The doctor told him that they took twice as long to "kick in" but last twice as long as cortisone. Seems like a no-brainer to me. He also just got his first Enterolab kit. I, in the meantime have quit eating dairy and nightshades (which may or may not be necessary) and am trying acupuncture. Hopefully if this is all just a reaction to the gluten we will both come out of this okay. The more I learn about food sensitivities the more amazed I am.

I did the full panel last summer because I was still having WD. It showed no reaction to anything! My Fecal Anti-Gliadin IgA was 13, which I guess could mean I'm getting small minute amounts somewhere? That was it. It must have been something else in my "world" causing this....but knowing my numbers really put my mind at ease that it was not something I was eating. And that to me was priceless.

That was my feeling too, Vanessa. It was a real sigh of relief when I saw the numbers. I have also worked on my thyroid and adrenal issues and am feeling pretty well for the most part.....still working on some sleep issues but they have improved a bit.

Thanks for sharing! Your results give hope to us who are newer at the MC game. It's interesting that you continued to eat dairy and eggs in 2010 even though your Enterolab numbers were above the normal range. Apparently, you were fine eating both. That's not to say I will start eating dairy and eggs but it is interesting. Why are you giving up dairy now, for the knee pain?
