New to this site

Post by Marty828 »

I was diagnosed with lymphocytic colitis about 1 year ago. When first diagnosed I was put on budesonide ad within 48 hrs had relief. I stayed on the budesonide for four months and everything seemed to be ok except for the occasional flare-up. I made no great diet changes during this time as it was not suggested. In June I had a major flare starting with 25-30 WD episodes a day which ended up with a 6 day hospital stay because my potassium was so low that I was experiencing heart arrhythmias. I was given IV steroids as well as potassium while in hospital and sent home on prednisone. Saw my GI Dr. and he has kept me on the prednisone (tapering now) and added mesalamine. The only dietary restrictions were no refined sugars or sugar substitutes and no lactose. I did ok for a couple of weeks and again am having a few flare-ups. After reading many posts, plus the book (read whole thing yesterday!!) Guess I need to go gluten free. I have decided to go on the paleo diet. Do you think this would help?

I was so happy to find this site. It is a wealth of great information and ideas. Just hoping I can get this under control and that I can feel reasonably normal again. It interferes with EVERYTHING and not many people understand that!!

Hi Marty,

Welcome to our Internet family. Yes, your response to medications is typical, but if you want to stop the inflammation from being regenerated with each meal, a diet change is indeed necessary to avoid all your inflammatory foods. The diet change can be made with or without medications, but with any luck at all, after your immune system stops producing antibodies to certain foods, and your intestines heal (which takes a while), even though the disease has no cure, you won't need any medications to remain in remission — you just have to carefully watch what you eat.

We have to establish a new normal, because so much of our life revolves around food, but by changing our diet we're able to once again be healthy, happy, and no longer required to worry about the location of the nearest bathroom.

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Yes, paleo is a good way to go but continue to overcook veggies for awhile.

Also, welcome!

Hi, Marty. Welcome to our group! Search the forums, ask questions, make dietary changes and before you know it like Tex said, you won't have to think about the nearest bathroom!
