QUESTION ABOUT HERBAL TEAS

Post by TREESE »

Greetings, ALL -

Just started seeing an Osteopath Acupuncturist who is also an MD. I was getting headaches from my cervical spine disc herniations. He told me he found that I was very stressed and that certain Herb Teas could help to calm my nerves down.

Question: Has anyone with Collagenous Colitis found Oolong Tea and Jasmine Tea safe for their stomachs? Any reactions? Bloating or gas? Diarreah?

What about Ginger Tea?

Thank You!

I have LC, but I'll answer anyway. I can drink both oolong tea and jasmine tea, but you should be aware that neither of those are herbal teas. Those are types of regular black tea. I haven't tried ginger tea.

Many herbal teas contain either gluten or soy, so you'll need to check the ingredients and maybe call the company to find out whether there is gluten. I drink peppermint tea and Sleepytime tea with no trouble. I avoid other herbal teas, but that's because I don't trust them to be soy free.

Hi, MARTHA - Thank you for your Reply and for sharing your experience! I do appreciate it.

So Jasmine Tea is a Black Tea? I think the box said it was a Green Tea. But, if I am understanding you correctly, your point is that they are both NOT Herbal Teas. And that Both have Caffeine. So care is needed.

I guess I'm trying to figure out which of the 3 I mentioned hit my stomach the wrong way. Maybe the Ginger did it?

Anyone else have experience they could share?

I drink jasmine tea, a kind called jasmine pearls, which is green tea. Jasmine gets added to regular tea leaves so that tea leaves and jasmine are the only ingredients. I also drink ginger tea but it is tea I make myself from dried ginger. With tea you have to be careful with the ingredients as Martha says. It's always possible to make herbal tea from fresh or dried herbs and then added ingredients are not a problem. When I buy tea I buy high quality loose leaf tea so that I am sure of what I am getting.

Hello, JEAN - Jasmine Pearl has ONLY Jasmine as an ingredient and it comes mixed with Green Tea leaves, Correct?

Do you have a particular Brand that you favor?

Is it in Tea Bag form or must I purchase it as a loose tea and mix it myself with Green Tea Leaves? I would appreciate your guidance, as I am not familiar with these processes.

And the Ginger Tea you make yourself... what do you buy and how do you prepare it, please? Where do you get your supply from?

Deeply grateful for yours and Martha's assistance,

Hi Treese - You buy jasmine pearls pre-made, not usually tea bags but loose tea. I am a purist so I buy from high end tea companies where I can trust the ingredients. Some companies that have jasmine peals are Rishi Tea, Teavana, Adagio Tea, Republic of Tea.

I think I used dehydrated ginger root from Mountain Rose Herbs. All you do is steep the ginger root in boiling water. You can also find ginger tea, just plain ginger, at the various tea companies.

There's a whole world of tea to explore beyond the boxes you find in the grocery store. You still always have to check the ingredients.

Another source for quality teas that I use is MURCHIES in Vancouver & Victoria, British Columbia.
MURCHIES is an old, family run business. I subscribe to their blog and take advantage of their specials. One of my favorites is called LIBRARY TEA.. a great blend of green and black tea with a distinctive flavor... the name is indicative of a gentle tea perfect for afternoon sipping whilst reading a good book...
I have had problems with any of their teas....

I do best with one ingredient teas. If they have ingredient lists of more than one item then I avoid them. A lot of them have "natural flavorings."
