Diverticulosis

Post by SherylR »

I now have been diagnosed with diverticulosis. I am following the AIP/FODMAPs way of eating. Have had a happy belly for about 6-8 months now. Eat tons of veggies. Lots of salads and fruits but mostly cooked veggies not raw - except lettuce for the salad. 2-3 huge salads every day. Am now taking a fibre supplement. It's a fine line between how much to keep going and then diarrhea. I have actually been quite constituted the last 6-7 months. So read up that that's not good for diverticulosis. Help??? Anyone else here had this problem and are good? I need to go - not diarrhea. Not constipation. I forget what normal is. 😰😰

Hi Sheryl,

I'm not sure I understand your question. But maybe you mean that you have been constipated the last 6–7 months (instead of constituted). If that's the case, please be aware that chronic constipation is a symptom of chronic magnesium deficiency. You can treat a magnesium deficiency that's causing constipation by taking about 300 mg of magnesium citrate. Adjust the dosage up or down to get the results you want.

Minor dehydration can cause constipation (major dehydration can cause diarrhea), so make sure that you're getting enough water to meet your needs.

I had chronic constipation, and diverticulosis/divertictulitis until I discovered that I also had a chronic magnesium deficiency. But I discovered it too late, I had already had to have surgery to remove part of my sigmoid colon because of a stenosis that eventually caused a blockage.

Diverticulosis

Yes Tex - thank you - I did mean constipated. Either a typo or darn auto correct. I will check into the magnesium. Thanks. I'm taking Vit C also. That helps with the Go if I take the right amount. So will try to figure it all out.

The reason why vitamin C loosens the stool is probably because many/most MC patients cannot tolerate ascorbic acid, so it causes diarrhea. Interestingly, diverticulitis is associated with the same type of inflammation as LC, namely lymphocytic infiltration.
