And So It Happened
I have been very fortunate with eating out and not getting glutened, traveling has not even been an issue. Two weeks ago we went to a local restaurant that we haven't been to for several years and it was fine. We went back on Friday evening. I had the usual "safe" meal - steak, baked potato and zucchini. I stressed that I needed everything plain because I have food allergies. I always say allergies rather than sensitivities because allergies is more commonly understood. The last time I got steamed broccoli but they didn't have any this time so I opted for the zucchini. Saturday I woke up with a headache and was belching throughout the day. I had to take a nap which I haven't needed for months. I'm not sure what the source of gluten was. The steak was more juicy than the last one I had there and the zucchini was sautéed in something and I wasn't going to eat it. Lesson learned - never let the guard down. If it wouldn't be for my husband I wouldn't go out to eat. I didn't have bone broth but I drank coconut water and that did seem to help a bit.

I had something similar happen a few years after eating steak at Applebee's ...when I called after a severe reaction I learned they marinated the steak in a sugar solution plus mystery ingredients! None of this was included on the menu!
That was my last trip to Applebee's....

Oh Marcia,
Sometimes it is the little things that put us over the edge isn't it.
It could have been a combo of things - so yes eating out is always a 'crap shoot' !!
I tend to eat at Mexican restaurants a bit more so than others....and the Red Robin an hour away has a dedicated allergy cooking station within it....if I could find more of those types of places I would enjoy going out more.
Hugs

Hi, Sunny. I haven't eaten at Applebee's in a long time because I didn't think it was safe for me to eat there. I think I read on AllergyEats that they're not very allergy friendly. The mystery ingredients are a bummer!
Erica, I have eaten and Red Robin and I'm always okay there. I think they cater to kids with allergies and that's fine by me! The closest one to me is about 45 minutes away but we normally stop when we go to Costco. We don't have any Mexican restaurants, either. Ironically, we were having company Saturday evening for the first time all summer. Since my husband's illness we haven't invited any friends over. It was fine but I was bummed that I didn't feel well for most of the day prior to their arrival. I told them ahead of time that it was a "no fuss" get together and so it was!

Applebees---avoid---virtually almost everything has gluten and/or soy. The foods at Applebees are heavily and I mean heavily processed.
I've never had a problem with a Red Robin burger on lettuce.
Marcia, sorry you suffered. My last two restaurant meals were disastrous. I did not get sick but I had to keep sending the meal back because it came out with gluten options on the plate and touching my food after I had specified no bun etc.

I have eaten out a few times this summer with my husband for a treat for him, although sometimes he will stop at a take-out place and bring home something for his own meal, and I eat a previously frozen delicious meal prepared by me, so I time it to have it ready when he arrives and I fool myself in thinking it is also take-out.. I took it our of the freezer Ha!
Okay, but when I do go out to eat with him, I will research on line at first of any menu ingredients that I can safely eat and upon arriving I mention to the waiter if there is a possible way for the chef to cook a peice of protien in a separate pan cleaned from any residu of any previously cooked foods and add only olive oil to the pan with a few acceptable fresh herbs if not available I have it without seasoning of any kind. However on the road this summer, I had to do the best I could, so the one restaurant I thought it was okay to eat they served me a peice of steamed chicken breast and steamed shrimp nothing else on my plate , I laugh the server came to the table to serve it to me and her expression on her face was as if she was delivering someone the most horrible meal ,and you know what it was delicious, I got to eat that food in its natural cooked form and I knew I was going to feel great the rest of the day no trips to the bathroom or an upset stomach, which I will never forget how that feels and will never take my health for granted ever, being on guard and taking care of me, myself and I, so that I can be 100% living in this world with my loved ones is so worth taking the time to do what I have to and be my best I can be. Life has changed and I have accepted it and my quality of life is so much better than any food full of enemies for my body.. no thank-you been there and done that and I thank this disease in waking me up to listening to my body and taking the best care of it I can.. Of course that is my opinion and may sound so wacky to someone else but yep, that is what I do to live.. and just be happy with this disease. and the many limitations but also the many possiblities of things you can continue to do as you age with energy and zest for life , Life is what you make it, in your own corner of this world , emotions of gratitude is so comforting and gets me through the day without feeling too sorry for myself which is a trap I could fall into so easily. I conclude with have a great day everyone and live life the best you can, it is worth it to be you ,so you can be the light for those you meet.
