A flare and a sinus infection at the same time
Hi,
I feel a bit guilty for returning to the forum when I have a problem or a question, and for not participating that much when everything goes well. But to my defence I must say that it’s a relief not having to concentrate on pains, being confused and unhappy, and just enjoy life and feeling «normal»
So, 10 days ago I got a terrible flare with cramps and D, and then a sinus infection hit me on day 2.
Today, both my stomach cramps, the D and the pains in my cheek and forehead are all gone! The sinus gave me awful pains in the face and in my head and a congested nose, and I could barely tie my shoelaces …
How is that? It’s weird how awful I felt for more than a week, and today it’s all gone
Could it be that I have had a latent streptococcal infection for some time, and that the flare made it come alive, or maybe it was vice versa?
Lilja

Hi Lilja,
Glad you've been doing so well before the flare. Don't feel guilty, everybody comes back here when they get sick. It's the only way we get to see some old friends.
You might be right about the streptococcal infection causing the sinus problem but I wonder if you might have had a viral infection that caused the flare in the first place, and then that triggered the latent streptococcal infection (because bacteria like to take advantage of a situation when the immune system is distracted by another issue).
Hope you stay well, but if you do, maybe you can find another excuse to come back here once in a while. It's good to hear from you again.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
Thank you, Tex for your kind words and for your conclusion, which backs my suspicion that bacteria like to take advantage of a situation when the immune system is distracted by another issue, but you put it perfectly.
I hope you are doing well

I'm doing OK. I'm gettin' older, uglier, and dumber, but I can't complain, healthwise. As long as I watch what I eat, I have no aches or pains, and I feel good. Life is good.

Not trying to confuse the issue but here's another theory: maybe you ate something that had an inflammatory effect on your body which resulted in the sinus issues and the D? The reason the timing is so "timely" on this post is because just a few hours ago I made the discovery, or maybe I should call it a deduction, that when I eat something that I am sensitive or intolerant to, the first thing I notice is a stuffy head (blocked ears, pain in my face, pain on the roof of my mouth, headache, etc.) and also stomach upset.
I used to use Claritin D, Flonase and Afrin to keep my head clear but once I gave up dairy, my head cleared up and I gave up all three meds. This weekend and today I had the head symptoms again and was confused because I haven't had any dairy so thought maybe it was a cold or flu. But then that voice in my head said "Hey, have you eaten anything different in the past few days?" I thought back and realized I had been snacking on some "gluten free" treats Friday through today. I ran over to the box and looked at the ingredients and number one ingredient is soy isolate. I grabbed my Enterolab results and bingo, my score was 14 for soy. Not quite enough to tear up my gut but obviously enough to swell up my nasal tissue.
So... have you eaten anything different lately? Maybe you're having an inflammatory effect? Just my 2 cents, but with everyone here contributing their two cents on various topics, we are all rich! :)

Diagnosed November 2004, Used Asacol and Lialda, sometimes worked, sometimes made it worse. Entocort always works but hate it. Remission only lasts 3-6 months and then back on Entocort. Enterolab test July 2017, now gluten free. Time will tell!

I'll let you have "older" because none of us has found the magic bullet for slowing that down, but unless you post an updated pic and give us a chance to vote on the "uglier" part, I'll have to disagree with you. And dumber?!?!? Not a chance.... I'm amazed daily at how full of information you are, how well you write, and how sharp you are.tex wrote:I'm doing OK. Yes, in fact I had two crabs and some sweet potatoes prior to the D. I haven't eaten crabs for several years, and sweet potatoes are quite new on the market here, so maybe I have had sweet potatoes 2-3 times in my life. So, maybe you are right.Sue777 wrote: So... have you eaten anything different lately? Maybe you're having an inflammatory effect? I'm not sure if I'm hoping that was your issue or not..... regardless of why it happened, it's awful to have to deal with two illnesses at the same time. :(
Pay attention the next time you have crab or sweet potato.... if your sinuses act up again, you might have an inflammatory response to one of them.

Sue and Shirley,
Even a blind hog finds an acorn now and then. LOL.
But thanks, I appreciate you trying to whitewash my shortcomings. You're truly dear friends.

It's my left one that goes first, too! I guess we should consider ourselves lucky that we have this built in barometer...... I am going to start paying much more attention to the state of my ears, head, and nose, but I also will need to determine the difference between inflammation from something I ate versus inflammation due to allergy season, pollen, etc.brandy wrote:Sue, when my left ear clogs I know I've had inflammatory foods. gluten sugar, dairy etc too many grains etc
I'll get this yet!

Lilja,
When I eat yams or sweet potatoes, I always react....it took me a while to realize the culprit...my thought was it was fiber, but when I began to tolerate other fibrous foods, I realized it's something in the sweet potato ...
