Whole Foods and Amazon

Post by Deb »

It will be interesting to see where this goes.

Amazon Prime members will soon get special discounts at Whole Foods.

Amazon's acquisition of Whole Foods will close on Monday, and the companies say they will then lower the prices of many grocery items.

Over time, they say they will extend special discounts to Prime members.

"Amazon and Whole Foods Market technology teams will begin to integrate Amazon Prime into the Whole Foods Market point-of-sale system, and when this work is complete, Prime members will receive special savings and in-store benefits," the companies said in a release.

"Customers will enjoy lower prices on products like Whole Trade bananas, organic avocados, organic large brown eggs, organic responsibly-farmed salmon and tilapia, organic baby kale and baby lettuce, animal-welfare-rated 85% lean ground beef, creamy and crunchy almond butter, organic Gala and Fuji apples, organic rotisserie chicken, 365 Everyday Value organic butter, and much more," the companies said.

Amazon also plans to make Prime the customer rewards program at Whole Foods.

Products from Whole Foods' private label, 365, will also be available on Amazon.

The company hasn't yet indicated a time frame for all the changes.

Hi Deb,

I think this will turn out to be a very big shakeup/wakeup for the food industry. Amazon prime subscribers will be big winners and it can only improve the management of Whole Foods. Whole Foods should become a place where everyone can shop for food (not just those who are willing to spend whatever it takes to do their grocery shopping).

Tex and Deb, I agree 100%!

The stock prices of the standard food companies were down yesterday.

This move is such a boon for those who want to eat safe food. I believe everyone should be eating organic, non-GMO, and this will hopefully make it more affordable. It will also help to promote major changes in agriculture. For example, the GMO folks are saying that the tipping point for them will be when 16% of Americans are eating organically. IOW, it will no longer pay for them to be genetically modifying our food. YIPPEE!!

BTW, studies are showing that GMOs are not safe. When they began doing this, they used an assumption that they were only changing one gene in the organism. They have now found that many genes are changed at the same time. Who knows what this does to the basic nutrition of that organism? Not to mention the health effects. It is definitely true that the health of this nation has declined significantly in recent decades. And it has been found that the 5 "myths" about the value GMOs are patently false.

How about that GMO "arctic" apple? It was modified so that it doesn't get brown when cut. How silly is that? We have spent eons evolving with our food. A fruit is meant to picked when it is at its height of ripeness, which undoubtedly means that is when it has its optimal nutritional impact. Once it is naturally brown, it is telling us that it may no longer be as nutritious (or even safe to eat).

This is good news. The only way things change are through their pocketbooks. Any idea what percentage we are currently at?

Hi Deb,

I believe it's around 5% at this time but is growing quickly.

You are absolutely correct.....we must vote with our pocketbooks (and values). We know that the gov't. has never protected us.....it is completely beholden to the corporations, especially big pharma and chemicals (the two industries that have the most to lose if people recover their health by eating healthfully). I wholeheartedly believe that REAL food is the best medicine!

Polly, your comment about the "arctic" apple reminded me of my daughter's Science Fair project 30 years ago when she was about 10 years old. At the time we lived in Rochester, in upstate New York which is an old-time famous apple-growing region. Literally hundreds of apple varieties were available. It was common knowledge that some apples browned much faster than others when peeled and sliced. My daughter researched the causes of apples browning, and then picked about 20 different varieties and timed how long they took to brown and made a graph of the results. There was one variety in particular that still hadn't browned by the end of the day. So no need to go GMO........ the natural genes are there and could be used instead to breed an apple that doesn't brown. But of course, you can't patent that like you can the "arctic" GMO apple.........

Ah, but a lot of merchandisers are willing to overlook nutrition and palatability if they can eliminate having to throw away rotten fruit and losing that investment. They really don't care how nutritious a rotten apple might be, as long as they can still sell it. Throwing away rotten fruit is expensive.

No Whole Foods within spitting distance (No Trader Joes either) so this does me no good despite Amazon Prime. Of course I have my local food coop to shop in with loads of local organic produce and probably at lower prices than Whole Foods (wouldn't know since I've never been there). I have been paying attention to the quality of my food for a long time now.

Rosie, I enjoyed your story! I am appalled that the chem. companies were allowed to patent seeds (and to buy up more than half of the world's seeds). I thought the rule was that "natural" items can't be patented. I guess there was an admission right from beginning that GMO seeds weren't natural. It will be up to the farmers and other enlightened souls trying to preserve diverse seeds to save us, I think.

Tex, hahaha. I am so fed up with the corporatocracy this country has become....it just gets worse and worse. Sigh.

Jean, I'll bet Amazon will find a way to bring organic food to your front door sooner rather than later. Isn't it interesting that Amazon is setting itself up to be a major player in improving the health of the country? I'll bet big pharma and the chem. companies will have to do anything possible to discredit Amazon. Did you know that Monsanto hires trolls to search social media in order to publicly bully and shame anyone who dares to challenge them?

Jean,
We aren't close to Whole Foods or Trader Joe's with our move either and I do miss that...a few stores have small organic sections for produce so that helps....
Amazon Prime will help in some areas, but not fresh food and that is my focus...
