New Research on Cause of Increasing Gluten Sensitivity
Hi Folks!
I listened to a talk today by a Dr. Zach Bush, an MD who has been doing research. Specifically, he believes that Roundup (glyphosate) is implicated in the increase in gluten sensitivity over the past few decades. As you all know, huge amounts of this chemical have been poured onto farmlands, and virtually all of us have measurable glyphosate in our bodies. It is everywhere now: 75% of water samples in the lower Mississippi River, as well as 75% of air samples, now contain glyphosate. It is in our rain.
He believes the problem began in the early 90s, when glyphosate began being used as a dessicant on wheat (apparently the first time it was sprayed directly on a crop in huge amounts). Wheat was saturated with glyphosate in order to make it dry much faster. This has changed the carb to fiber ratio of the wheat so that it contains far more gliaden (gluten) now. Many of us cannot handle this increased gluten, although we were able to handle the smaller amounts we ingested in the past.
Additionally, Dr. Bush has found that glyphosate is synergistic with gliaden. The toxin up-regulates the gut receptor for gliaden, causing leaky gut.
These two "whammies" may be responsible for the great increase in gluten sensitivity that has occurred in the past few decades.
It fits my history. My gut problems started 18 years ago after I had been eating a vegetarian diet for 12 years. My diet was very heavy on breads, particularly wheat.
An update:
For about 6 months now, I have been eating an organic, non-GMO, mostly plant-based diet, and I have never felt better. I have been able to stop my blood pressure med and take only vitamin D3 and cholestyramine daily. I don't recommend this diet for those just diagnosed with MC because it takes a while for the gut to heal before one can tolerate the fiber in a plant-based diet. But for those who hope to eat a varied, healthy diet in the future, there is hope!
P.S. I was paleo for much of the last 18 years, but now am wondering about all of the glyphosate that may be in the farm animals who are fed GMO corn and soy to fatten them up quicker.
P.P.S. We have always wondered why our MC seems to act up in certain seasons, i.e. spring and fall
Apparently pollen has measurable glyphosate too.

That is very interesting.....I also had bouts of D starting in my 20's. (17 years ago) and often wondered if increased toxins in our food was responsible for my "unexplained" infertility and all the infertility I am seeing in my young friends now. I always joke with my husband that he better watch out, or we will have a newborn in our 40's.
It is excellent that you are feeling better and back to your veges again. I am glad you updated us. I too eat a huge salad for lunch almost daily, so there is hope. I remember eating my first salad in 4 years like it was a bowl of ice cream. I was like a crazed animal in the corner with my head buried in the bowl! I feel better when I eat more veges with minimal protein myself. I found significant healing this last year getting on the right kind of minerals my body could absorb. It seemed I was missing some key nutrients to get me past the hump. Come back and see us soon!

Another interesting fact about glyphosate: it hooks onto to other toxins (think lead and other heavy metals, for example) and enables them to more readily cross the blood/brain barrier. This is really scary, because over the past few decades there has been quite an increase in certain neurological conditions. Like autism and dementia. And both of these are increasing by leaps and bounds.
Of course, no causal relationship has yet been established, but there certainly is a correlation.
Hmmm, why do you suppose Monsanto wants to sell Roundup to Bayer???

I am glad things are working so well for you Polly. I believe that whatever foods one eventually determines work best for oneself, it is important to pay attention to food quality, not just for health reasons but for environmental reasons as well. I eat meat but not factory farmed meat. Along with wild caught canned salmon and sardines, it is my primary source of protein. I am not convinced that a mostly plant based diet is the healthiest way to eat, at least it wouldn't be for me even if it works well for others. I do eat a fair amount of vegetables these days. I have a big salad every morning, all organic. I once couldn't handle the fiber in a salad. I pay attention to the micronutrient content of my food, trying to assure an adequate intake, by logging my food on Cronometer. I joined this forum over 7 years ago and it has taken me this long to work up to my current health status which also is the best I've been for a very long time. There are no magic one size fits all formulas. Some of my food decisions are based on my symptoms, others based on my environmental concerns and/or ethical considerations and budget always figures in there too. It's a delicate balancing act sometimes and does not lend itself to one size fits all. That said we can all learn from each other as we find our way towards health.

The info you provided on Round-Up is very interesting. I didn't have D until this past year, age 67, when my gluten sensitivity showed up. But I certainly ate my share, no doubt, of Round-Up grains in KS where I grew up and was living. I remember seeing small airplanes flying over fields as they sprayed. The other health issues I've dealt with, including autoimmune, who knows?
I am eager to eat more vegetables and less protein as that was my diet before MC. I was not vegetarian but ate many such meals. Because I tend toward constipation I think I can handle more now. Salads are the one thing i crave. Romain does not seem to bother me so I will experiment with adding more vegetables. It's great that you and Jean can now enjoy salads.
Here is an interesting, short article on gut microbe research comparing Western gut bacteria to a tribe in Africa that remain hunter gatherers. Research on gut microbes continues to expand. Maybe one day the findings will benefit us all.

Ever since I got MC, I have been concerned about our food supply. I truly believe it is what is making us so unhealthy. Not just processed foods but the huge amounts of pesticides/herbicides in our bodies now as well as GMO (especially from soy and corn in cooking oils and high-fructose corn syrup). The effects of Roundup and GMOs have never been researched appropriately - the gov't allows the chemical companies to perform its own (very short-term) studies and then accepts them. And as the Roundup builds up in our bodies, it increases the amount considered OK for humans so that more chemicals can be poured on the crops. It is a terrible, dangerous experiment that we are all participating in.
I am very concerned about the millennial generation......the young folks who have eaten these toxins and GMOs since birth. They are increasingly sick, and no one seems to be connecting the dots. It is said that they will be the first generation to be less healthy and die sooner than their parents. I am alarmed by findings such as the HUGE increase in cancer in this generation (example, liver and colon cancer, which we almost never used to see under 40 or 50 years old), not to mention the meteoric rise in autism. Something is wrong when 1 in 50 boys or less will have autism.
I am angry because we did not agree to take part in this massive experiment on our food supply by the chemical corporations who only want to sell their poisons. And with GMOs, the genie is out of the bottle - those existing crops can potentially harm our safe, organic crops. Also, scientifically, we have prevented ourselves from ever again having a healthy "control" group to further test what is being done to our food. It is probably already impossible to find an American who doesn't have Roundup in his body, since it is now in our water, our air, our rain, the pollen etc.
I saw where Putin has proclaimed that Russia will be GMO-free. Ironically, that country could become our best source for healthy foods one day. And its citizens might be a lot healthier.
Our only hope is to buy organic and non-GMO foods. It is up us!

Polly - Big food/big pharma has also played havoc with our nutritional guidelines, demonizing real foods and promoting industrial vegetable oils and high carb low fat highly processed foods. This in turn has played a major role in the current diabetes/obesity epidemic. Have you read Nina Teicholz's book "Big Fat Lie". The politics of nutrition are horrifying and it's all tied to big corporations with huge conflicts of interest in the advisory group members who determine the guidelines. Richard Feinman (not Feynman), a biochemist and author of the book "The World Turned Upside Down" calls the term "nutritional science" an oxymoron.

Diagnosed November 2004, Used Asacol and Lialda, sometimes worked, sometimes made it worse. Entocort always works but hate it. Remission only lasts 3-6 months and then back on Entocort. Enterolab test July 2017, now gluten free. Time will tell!

and in my case the use of Roundup (glyphosate) on cotton crops and this being so prevalent in products such as incontinence liners and the like, which i started wearing daily with the arrival of MC issues in my life, was a major contributor to my lichen sclerosis issues.

This continuing conversation was really helpful...I have also been concerned about the food supply and recognize the allure of food ads on TV and magazines advertising not only junk, but harmful food choices and so few see they are being wooed by large companies who are not really interested in "natural" healthy food, but rather the focus is their bottom lines ....but I can only do what I can do...
