allergy problem

Post by hazel »

The baby is such a sad sack. She has her first ear infection and the dr. gave her amoxicillin. I told him that her father and I are both allergic to penicillin but he said that an allergy wouldn't show up the first time she used it and it was the best drug for ear infections. Well, after her first dose she had a little hive on her forehead and after the second dose her right cheek and nose are bright red and hot. Called the dr. and he said to give her some benadryl and give her her next dose of amoxicillin when it was time. Well, we are not giving her any more of that! She's going back in tomorrow morning. We gave her 1/4 tsp of benadryl. Now she's watching Baby Einstein and vegging out, but she hasn't been her usual happy self.

Not a major problem but nothing sadder than a sick baby.

Kathy,

I'm certainly no pediatrician, but I believe you did the right thing by discontinuing the use of that antibiotic. If one is allergic to a substance, every exposure increases the severity of the allergic reactions. Why use up any slack in the baby's system at this early age, so that any exposure later in life would likely be that much more serious. I don't understand the doctor'r reasoning, to rationalize the use of such an antibiotic.

Maybe Polly can shed some light on this.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.
