Sugar

Post by charliemudcat »

I'm trying to follow an elimination diet. I have been on and off endocort for the past three years. I'm determined to heal my gut this time and am working on diet.

My question is, can I eat any sugar at all? I found a GF rice cereal that contains cane sugar. Off limits? You wouldn't know it had sugar to taste it, but it's crunchy and satisfies my cereal urge. With almond milk ok?

Thanks for the info!

Hi Katie,

Welcome to our Internet family. Sure, you can eat some sugar. It probably would be very difficult/impossible to totally avoid sugar. You just need to avoid large amounts of sugar because when our intestines are inflamed, the small intestine isn't able to produce normal amounts of the enzymes required to digest most types of sugar and the undigested sugar will tend to ferment after it reaches the colon, producing (additional) gas, cramps, bloating and diarrhea. I used to be a sugarholic. But after I had to avoid most sugar for a few years, things like unsweetened cereal now tastes as if it has been sweetened. I never add any sugar to Rice Chex or Corn Chex cereal now because that would make it too sweet.

And yes, most of us do fine with almond milk.

Again, welcome aboard, and please feel free to ask anything.

It is suspected that some of the hardest material known to science can be found in the skulls of GI specialists who insist that diet has nothing to do with the treatment of microscopic colitis.

Thank you for your prompt response. I'm sure I'll be posting again--it's hard, but gratifying, to take control of one's health. I feel like this forum may be the most help I've gotten in the past three years!
